According to Engadget , Sony just had a booming quarter in PlayStation 5 sales. The company sold 4.9 million consoles in its second fiscal quarter ending September 30, bringing the total number of PlayStation 5s sold to 46.6 million, 1.6 million more than the same period in 2022.
It's also worth noting that Sony was struggling to keep up with demand for its consoles for a long time due to supply chain issues, but production finally returned to normal last year after the difficulties eased. By July 2023, the company announced that it had sold more than 40 million PlayStation 5 units since its launch in late 2020.
Sony has sold 46.6 million PlayStation 5 units
However, to reach its goal of shipping 25 million PlayStation 5s this fiscal year, Sony will need to sell another 16.8 million units. That's a huge number considering the company sold just 19.1 million PlayStation 5 consoles in all of fiscal 2022. But according to Reuters, Sony President Hiroki Totoki is confident that the goal is something the company can easily achieve, which may be because they're banking on sales of the upcoming PlayStation 5 Slim model, which is due to launch this November, right around the holiday season.
In addition to console sales, Sony also reported that it sold 67.6 million games in Q2, of which 4.7 million were first-party games. However, the company is likely to see much higher first-party content sales in the coming quarter, as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 sold 5 million copies in its first 11 days, far surpassing the previous game's record of 9 million copies sold in 80 days.
