There are few artists who have been in crisis and can come back as quickly as Negav. Less than two months after a series of scandals, from shocking statements about dropping out of school to offensive comments, the male rapper reappeared at the concert Anh trai “say hi” day 2. From that time until now, Negav has been active as if nothing had happened. He continuously attended large and small events, released products and most recently returned to Anh trai “say hi” season 2.
It seemed like the storm had passed for Negav, but his quick and frequent return to the media made many people unhappy. From then on, just a small controversy was enough to spark a wave of boycotts to flare up again.
Boycott wave directed at Negav
The boycott wave returned at a time when Negav was about to embark on his journey on Anh trai “say hi” season 2 - the competition that was the launching pad that helped the rapper's career take off.
It all started when Negav participated in a media campaign for a women's brand. Controversy broke out when many viewers believed that the male rapper had acted disrespectfully towards women in the past, going against the values that the brand pursues.
After the incident, articles and videos recording Negav's activities during his comeback after the scandal were spread on social media. From these images, the audience believed that the male rapper still did not show maturity and repentance.
Amidst the controversy, Negav's move on his personal page continued to cause discussion. The rapper re-shared a status with the content: "Blowing out someone else's candle doesn't make yours any brighter." However, under the post, many viewers expressed disagreement, saying that the rapper still seemed to not see his own mistakes.
On social media, many viewers said they had sent letters protesting Negav’s presence at upcoming concerts, typically two music festivals in Hai Phong (August 30) and Quy Nhon (September 1). Under the posts promoting these events, many comments boycotting the male rapper also appeared. Under public pressure, Negav was removed from the artist list for the two concerts.
Most recently, on the afternoon of August 21, social networks circulated an article by the law firm PN Legal, which said it was authorized by Negav, warning that recent acts of distortion and slander have seriously affected the legitimate rights and interests of the male rapper. The article was accompanied by a document from the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (A05).
However, immediately afterwards, the official fanpage of A05 sent out a notice, stating that the agency was inviting individuals related to the above post to work with to verify and clarify the content of the document.
The above scandal continues to create a huge wave of debate on social networks, directly affecting Negav's image.
As of the morning of August 22, Negav remained silent in the face of the series of scandals in recent days.
Public opinion does not easily forget and does not accept an attitude of denying responsibility.
Talk to Knowledge - Znews , media expert Hong Quang Minh commented that the current wave of boycotting Negav is not only a temporary reaction but also a moral judgment of the community.
“Previously, when Negav’s scandal first broke out, people were outraged because of his personal story; but this time, the outrage stems from the fact that a big brand with a long-standing reputation among women is collaborating with a face that has been accused of harming that very group. When the old crisis has not been resolved, his reappearance in a large-scale program is seen as a step to ‘whitewash’ and legitimize his image,” he explained.
Not to mention, Negav’s quick return to the stage made many people feel that he was “surfing the public opinion” and not truly repenting or correcting himself. Since then, the boycott wave has become even stronger.
According to experts, Negav can no longer afford to “sit back and wait for things to calm down.” This strategy has worked in some cases in the past, but now the context is different, the public and social media are different. Gen Z - the generation that leads public opinion today - does not forget easily, and they do not accept an attitude of “denial of responsibility.”
“If Negav chooses to continue working without any act of repentance, he may still retain a group of loyal fans, but will lose the trust of the majority of neutral audiences, who decide the long-term career of an artist,” said Hong Quang Minh.
He also believes that first of all, Negav should suspend all public activities to seriously listen to public opinion and re-evaluate the consequences of his actions. At the same time, there should be a transparent dialogue, sharing the journey of facing mistakes, showing real efforts to change and make amends. Most importantly, Negav needs to rebuild trust, not just image.
According to experts, boycotts are not intended to destroy an individual, but rather a way for the public to demonstrate the limits of social acceptance. In Negav's case, when serious issues have not been addressed transparently and there are no proper efforts to reintegrate, continuing to support unconditionally will inadvertently blur the line between talent and character, between artist and social responsibility.
“Continuing to support Negav at this time will set a dangerous precedent that, as long as there is a large enough fan base, artists can come back regardless of past mistakes. This goes against the global trend, where celebrities are not only evaluated by their artistic products, but also by the moral influence and social role models they represent,” Mr. Hong Quang Minh emphasized.
