Trossard's decision to only increase his salary without renewing his contract was an unusual decision. |
This decision is controversial, as some opinions say that only increasing the salary without extending the contract term could make it difficult for Arsenal to sell the 30-year-old player in the future.
According to The Times , Arsenal have decided to reward Trossard with a contract that is worth more than the £110,000 a week he currently earns at the Emirates. However, the Gunners will not extend the contract beyond the current deal, which expires in June 2027.
This means Trossard, now 30, will receive a higher salary in the remaining two years of his contract, but Arsenal will find it almost impossible to maximise the player's transfer value if they want to sell in the future.
Football economist Kieran Maguire asked: “Someone needs to explain this to me. No contract extension, just a pay rise for two years, how can you sell him?”
It is worth remembering that Trossard was not even used by Mikel Arteta in the opening game of the season against Manchester United. Maguire believes that Arsenal's decision to increase Trossard's salary but keep his contract unchanged means the club are set to lose the player for free in the summer of 2027.
This is a financially confusing decision. In the summer transfer window of 2025, Trossard received interest from Fenerbahce, Brentford and Borussia Dortmund. However, Arsenal valued the Belgian player at a whopping 30 million euros, causing many clubs to hesitate.
