Lang Son is one of the northeastern mountainous provinces of the country, with a long history of traditional culture; the land where 7 ethnic groups converge and live, including: Nung, Tay, Kinh, Dao, Hoa, San Chay, Mong and some other ethnic minorities. Along with the language, writing, and costumes of the ethnic groups in Lang Son are unique traditional cultural heritages with easily recognizable characteristics of each ethnic group. Traditional costumes not only carry strong cultural identity, but also contain artistic and historical values ​​of each ethnic group. In recent years, the movement of wearing traditional ethnic costumes on holidays, Tet, festivals, and in important events and activities in the locality has been enthusiastically responded by the majority of people.

According to the Vice Chairman of Lang Son City People's Committee, Then singing clearly shows the outlook on life, world view, and cultural identity of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups in the Northeastern provinces and in Lang Son. Then singing and Tinh lute are typical and popular folk music, used in many cultural activities, festivals, and community activities. Besides traditional Then melodies, nowadays, along with socio-economic development and cultural exchange, folk dances and community dancing are also welcomed by the people, considered indispensable spiritual food in labor and production activities.
