On July 19, a reporter from Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper received a thank you letter from HGB (former student of Cao Ba Quat High School, Tan An Ward, Dak Lak Province).

Student HGB and parents met with reporters to report the incident.

HGB is one of four students who were allowed to return to school after the press reported that they were said to have "voluntarily" asked to leave school as the high school graduation exam was approaching.

In the handwritten letter, HGB shared that the 2024-2025 school year is a very special year for her, as it is her final year of high school but she is often sick. At the end of the school year, the school encouraged her to apply to reserve her results and take a leave of absence.

After applying to reserve her study results according to the school's instructions, HGB regretted and asked to go back to school but was not accepted.

"I went to see the principal and asked to go back to school, but she refused and said: "You won't pass the exam, the school has already removed you from the program." Even though my mother and I begged her, she ignored me and didn't give me a chance. My family and I were very sad, I thought the door to the future was closed. I was extremely depressed, disappointed and lost all faith" - HGB wrote in her thank you letter.

According to HGB, she then decided to meet with the journalist to ask the press to speak up. After the Lao Dong Newspaper published the article, the school called her back to school. Not only her, but many other students were also able to go back to school, all thanks to the enthusiastic help of the press.

"Today is the announcement day and we have passed the high school graduation exam. I am extremely grateful for the help of the press..." - HGB wrote a thank you letter.

As reported by Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, in the 2024-2025 school year, 16 12th grade students at Cao Ba Quat High School dropped out of school. Notably, many students were said to have "voluntarily" submitted applications to reserve their results or wrote applications to drop out of school.

On April 16, after the results of the second semester midterm exam were announced, HGB and her parents were invited to meet the principal, Ms. Huynh Thi Kim Hue. According to the parents' feedback, after the principal "confided", HGB was upset and wrote a request to leave school, reserving her results when there were more than 2 months left for the high school graduation exam.

A day later, the child's parent texted the homeroom teacher to ask to return to school, but received the reply: "No, ma'am, the principal has approved it." When the parent questioned and begged for the child to return to school, the teacher texted: "I'll return the diploma at 9:35 at the school gate."

Then, on April 29, the parents went to the school to meet the principal to ask for their children to go back to school. Here, the principal said: "HGB was not approved for the graduation exam, and did not pass the exam..." At this time, the parents begged the teacher to let them go back to school, but the principal bluntly said: "The school has been abolished, how can they go back to school? Okay, I thought something happened, go home."

After the Lao Dong Newspaper reported the incident, the Dak Lak Provincial Party Committee directed the Department of Education and Training to verify the incident. According to the Dak Lak Provincial Department of Education and Training, out of the 16 students who dropped out of school, 5 students submitted applications to reserve their study results.

However, the process of handling student absences and retention of results at Cao Ba Quat High School is not in accordance with the school charter and current regulations. Specifically, there is no regulation on retaining students' learning results. Thus, the homeroom teacher's advice to students to write an application to retain their learning results is not in accordance with regulations.

All 4 students passed high school graduation exam.

After the press reported, 4 students including: HGB (who applied to reserve their study results from April 16), HYM (who applied to reserve their results from April 25), HTP (who applied to reserve their results from April 14), YHN (who applied to drop out of school from April 17) returned to study and all passed the high school graduation exam.

Previously, responding to the press about public opinion that this was a "trick" of the school to reduce the high school graduation failure rate in the 2025 exam, Mr. Do Tuong Hiep, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Dak Lak province, said that there is currently no basis to confirm. The Department continues to verify related contents to consolidate the records, properly handle the collective and individual responsibilities involved at Cao Ba Quat High School.
