At the age of 26, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan won a full scholarship for a PhD in accounting and finance at the University of Bristol (UK), and she is the first Vietnamese person to be selected to the Board of Directors of the non-profit organization Voscur.

"Huge" achievement

Since high school, when she was still in Hai Duong, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan was famous for her excellent academic achievements. When studying at the National Economics University (Hanoi), Lan was always a good student and was the valedictorian of the school. In 2019, when she turned 22, with her excellent qualities, Lan won scholarships from 9 universities in the UK and Australia. However, Lan chose the Think Big scholarship worth about 20,000 pounds from the University of Bristol. During that time, Lan was 1 of 5 students in the world to receive a master's scholarship from this university. Not stopping there, in 2021, at the age of 24, Ngoc Lan continued to "hunt" for a full scholarship for a PhD in accounting and finance.

Sharing her secret to hunting for scholarships, Ngoc Lan said: "Usually, universities in Europe will focus on scientific research, so when I was a student, I tried to participate and carry out as many research topics as possible. Since then, I have had 6 scientific research works on accounting - finance, education, and museums published. These scientific research works have been published in domestic and international journals and scientific conferences". Ngoc Lan said that foreign universities really like students to participate in community activities. Therefore, she chose to further research the startup project "producing bamboo underwear with antibacterial Chitosan treatment for women". This is considered a bright spot that helps her "score points" and surpass many other scholarship "hunting" candidates in the world. By the end of 2022, Lan and 3 friends had "touched their dream" when their names were announced at the largest startup award ceremony in China for international students with the project "long-range nuclear radiation detector - Alpha". This is a project that applies science and technology to life, helping to optimize the efficiency of searching for and processing nuclear waste, thereby improving the quality of the living environment for people. In March 2023, when she turned 26, Ngoc Lan was nominated by students as the best teaching assistant of the year, a prestigious award for teaching assistants at the University of Bristol. Then in May 2023, Lan was honored to receive the award for inspirational woman of the year at the Vietnam International Awards ceremony of the Vietnam - UK International Women's Union on the occasion of 50 years of Vietnam - UK relations.

Ngoc Lan said that Voscur was founded in 1995 with a focus on empowering, collaborating, providing resources and training programs to improve the capacity of local organizations. At the same time, connecting and lobbying the government and businesses to meet the reasonable needs of people in Bristol (UK). Talking about the opportunity to become an honorary member, Ngoc Lan said: "To complete my qualitative research project at the University of Bristol, I had to interview 40 senior managers at organizations and businesses. So I met Ms. Rebecca Mear, the chair of this project and from there we had meetings, and finally went together". To get the "nod" to the board of directors of this non-governmental organization, Lan had to use her own doctoral research topic on "mental health" to present. She said: "Most of us know that mental health is important, but measuring something so intangible is a difficult problem, but the more difficult it is, the more I want to do it." Sharing the secret to conquering the interviewer, Ngoc Lan said she is always proactive and tries to take advantage of every opportunity. There were many days when Lan had to wake up very early, fight the cold in the foggy country, and sit on the train for 3 hours to have the opportunity to interview a senior manager. She spent all her time searching for, connecting with suitable managers and preparing for interviews.

This is also a big step forward for her in her journey to contribute to the community, continuing the humanitarian projects she has previously undertaken such as: volunteer teaching at the Ha Cau orphanage, starting a business producing bamboo underwear.
