BTO-For a long time, Ham Hiep commune, Ham Thuan Bac district has not only been known as an ornamental flower village specializing in producing yellow apricot flowers for Tet, but this place is also an area specializing in producing vegetables to supply the market every time Tet comes and spring comes.
To provide a source of clean vegetables with guaranteed quality for the Tet market this year, from the end of October and the beginning of November of the lunar calendar 2023, many farmers in Ham Hiep commune have focused on planting and taking care of vegetables with the hope of increasing their income during the upcoming Giap Thin Lunar New Year.
Grasping the tastes and needs of the market, in recent years, farmers in Ham Hiep commune have continuously expanded the area of vegetables for Tet; it is estimated that up to now, the total vegetable growing area of the whole commune has increased to nearly 11 hectares, with small-scale producers growing about 500m2 , while large-scale producers grow up to 3,000m2 , mainly concentrated in the four villages of Phu Dien, Phu Nhang, Xuan Dien and Dai Loc. In addition to cauliflower and cabbage, which account for more than 50% of the area, other types of vegetables are also focused on by the people, such as squash, Malabar spinach, mustard greens, bitter melon, etc.
To ensure the supply of green vegetables during the Lunar New Year 2024, based on the characteristics and growth time of each type of vegetable, from the end of October, beginning of November lunar year 2023, Farmers in Ham Hiep commune have started planting seeds. Instead of specializing in one type of vegetable, they choose to intercrop many types of vegetables on their family land to diversify their products and avoid the phenomenon of supply exceeding demand.
However, the vegetables that farmers produce the most are still cabbage and cauliflower, which are two types of vegetables that are consumed strongly during Tet with prices always stable at a high level. Unlike every year, the weather in the last months of the 2023 lunar year is quite favorable, there is no unseasonal rain, so pests and diseases on vegetables are significantly limited. In addition, the accumulated experiences are widely applied by farmers in Ham Hiep commune in care, so most of the green vegetable areas in the locality grow well, promising increased output...
“The output of green vegetables in Ham Hiep commune is mostly consumed at Phan Thiet wholesale market in two forms: wholesale and retail. To meet the increasingly strict market demand, local farmers are increasingly paying more attention to producing safe vegetables according to VietGap standards to improve the quality and value of green vegetables, ensuring stable output. Some households have also proactively invested in growing vegetables using hydroponics in greenhouses, which is effective, meeting the criteria of “clean, safe” favored by the market. With the current weather conditions, vegetable growers in the commune are confident and expecting a successful Tet vegetable crop, contributing to improving income when Tet comes, spring comes...”.
