Japan provides a series of large patrol ships to Southeast Asian partners

Japan continues to fulfill its commitment to help Southeast Asian partners improve their maritime protection capacity through the provision of patrol vessels.
Japan and the Philippines have finalized the formation of their largest maritime security project, under which the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will receive patrol vessels donated by Tokyo, Naval News reported. According to Naval News.
Under the cooperation program, the Japanese government will order five new large patrol vessels from Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Company to enhance the capacity of the Philippines' maritime law enforcement force. According to Naval News.
The new Philippine patrol vessels will be built on the basis of the Kunigami class, which has long been developed and used by the Japan Coast Guard, according to Naval News.
The $507 million deal will be funded through a loan from the Official Development Assistance Agency, a subsidiary of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, according to Naval News.
It should be emphasized that this is the largest agreement in history that the Japanese government has given to the Philippine maritime law enforcement agency. According to Naval News.
Of the total contract cost, $425 million will be used to build five 97-meter-long large patrol vessels. The Philippine Coast Guard officially classifies them as Multi-Role Rapid Response Vessels (MRRVs), according to Naval News.
Another issue that needs to be mentioned is that in addition to the large patrol vessels, the Philippine Coast Guard will receive a five-year logistics support package from Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Company, according to Naval News.
Currently, the Philippine maritime law enforcement force has been using patrol vessels built by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, specifically the BRP Teresa Magbanua along with the BRP Melchora Aquino. According to Naval News.
Both ships were built on the basis of Kunigami-class patrol boats. In addition, from 2016 to 2018, the Philippines received 10 small patrol boats produced by Japan Marine United. According to Naval News.
Not only the Philippines, earlier in the meeting in Tokyo, Japan agreed to build a large patrol ship for the Indonesian Coast Guard. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which specializes in building various types of surface patrol vessels for the Japan Coast Guard, will participate in building new patrol vessels for its Indonesian partner, according to Naval News.
Indonesia's area is 1,920,000 square kilometers, about five times larger than Japan. Meanwhile, the country's maritime law enforcement force has only 10 patrol vessels ranging in length from 48 meters to 110 meters. According to Naval News.
Obviously, such a number of ships is not enough to patrol such a large archipelago, so Indonesia - a country with common interests with Japan - has turned to Tokyo with a request for joint security assistance within the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
