A dangerous security vulnerability has been discovered on the iOS and iPadOS platforms, allowing hackers to send users an image containing malicious code, which when they accidentally open the image file will simultaneously activate the malicious code allowing hackers to infiltrate the device.

Apple said the security flaw is related to the way memory is handled on iPhones and iPads, allowing data to be accessed in locations where it does not belong, giving hackers the opportunity to execute malicious code to install malware on the device.

This security vulnerability is considered serious, as users can be infected with malware just by viewing an image. The malware penetrates silently and can collect user information and data on the device.

Apple said the vulnerability was used in highly sophisticated attacks targeting specifically selected individuals, suggesting it was likely exploited to target high-profile people such as journalists, lawyers, activists, etc.

Apple had to rush to release iOS and iPadOS 18.6.2 upgrade for iPhone and iPad users to patch this dangerous security hole.

Users of iPhone XS and later, iPad Pro 3rd generation and later, iPad Air 3 and later, iPad mini 5 and later, and iPad 7th generation and later can update to the latest version of iOS and iPadOS 18.6.2 to fix the bug.

Users of older iPhones and iPads that are no longer supported for upgrading to new software versions will face the risk of being unprotected and security vulnerabilities still existing on their devices.

What should users do to protect themselves?

The best defense against this dangerous security vulnerability is to upgrade to iOS and iPadOS 18.6.2 as soon as possible.

In case you are using old devices that are no longer supported for upgrading to new software versions, users can protect themselves by not opening files sent from strangers via messaging apps or emails, even if they are just normal image files.

If conditions permit, users should switch to newer devices to ensure updates to patches released by the manufacturer, avoiding becoming a target for hackers.

This security flaw shows that iPhones and iPads are not necessarily more secure than Android devices. All electronic devices are at risk of having security holes that can be exploited by hackers to attack users.
