According to the reporter of Giao thong Newspaper on a normal day (no rain, no incidents...), the road about 1km from Hang Xanh intersection to Dai Liet Si intersection (Binh Thanh district, Ho Chi Minh City) is congested with traffic during rush hour.
According to Google Maps, this route only takes about 3 - 5 minutes. However, in reality, this route must be multiplied by 3 - 5 times (if there are no incidents). If it rains or there is a vehicle breakdown or accident on the road, it will take people 40 - 50 minutes to travel this 1km.
At nearly 6 p.m. on October 21, vehicles from many directions poured onto Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street. In addition to the main stream of motorbikes, many buses and private cars traveled through this route. The traffic was already crowded, and occasionally there were traffic conflicts at the intersection with Bach Dang Street, D5 Street and some alleys... making the congestion even more serious.
In just a moment, the entire road was packed with vehicles. However, many people passing through here still said that today was "clearer" and much easier to breathe than on rainy days.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hung (35 years old, living in Thu Duc City) said that traffic jams on Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street are nothing strange. It is unusual if there are no traffic jams on a day. "It is really tiring but there is no other way. During rush hour, traffic jams occur on every road. On lucky days, we move slowly, on rainy or windy days or when there is an accident, we move little by little, sometimes walking is faster," Mr. Hung said wearily.
Traffic was packed on the afternoon of October 21 on Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street.
"People really want to have spacious and clean roads to travel on. No one wants to be stuck in traffic in the morning going to work and stuck in traffic in the afternoon going home like this. Just the travel time on the road every day is doubled just because of traffic jams," said Ms. Thanh Thao, a resident of Binh Thanh District.
Not only the main roads were jammed, but the small alleys connecting the roads around Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street were also jammed. Many people had to wait in line to move forward.
According to information from the HCM City Department of Transport, Binh Thanh District regularly records traffic jams on Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street (from Bach Dang to Dai Liet Si intersection); Hang Xanh intersection and Dinh Bo Linh intersection.
According to statistics, in the first 9 months of 2024, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street (from Bach Dang to Dai Liet Si intersection) was congested 615 times; Dinh Bo Linh intersection was congested 588 times and Hang Xanh intersection was congested 161 times. These are also three "black spots" of traffic congestion in Binh Thanh district in particular and in Ho Chi Minh City in general.
To reduce traffic pressure in the area, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has proposed that the city government prioritize investment in expanding Dinh Bo Linh Street and Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street from now until 2030.
In particular, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street will be deployed on a 2km long section, from Hang Xanh to the foot of Binh Trieu Bridge (including a section of National Highway 13 through Mien Dong Bus Station). The road surface will be widened to 30m and the Martyrs' Monument intersection will be built according to the roundabout and underpass plan. The project has a total capital of about 7,000 billion VND.
At the same time, the HCM City Department of Transport requested the consulting unit to add a research plan to build elevated roads at the gateways to the city's master plan. Including National Highway 13, National Highway 1, National Highway 22, the North-South axis road and Binh Tien bridge. This could be an effective solution for the current situation of HCM City.
