Moscow says 'illegal', insists EU failed to achieve goals

On June 26, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev commented on Telegram that the 14th package of sanctions by the European Union (EU) will not achieve its goals and will be another hostile act against Russia.

The Russian official's warning came after the EU adopted its 14th package of sanctions against Russia, specifically targeting the country's gas exports.

According to a press release from the European Council, the new sanctions list adds 69 individuals and 47 entities "responsible for actions undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine."

The new sanctions target high-value sectors of the Russian economy , including energy, finance and trade, according to a statement issued by the European Council.

These sanctions directly target Russia's gas industry, especially liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The new sanctions will hinder the transshipment of Russian LNG from EU ports, as well as purchases through the bloc's terminals.

The new sanctions package will also give the 27-member bloc more tools to prevent sanctions evasion, as well as target 116 additional individuals and entities.

* Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said that Moscow firmly opposes the recently approved sanctions package of the EU and considers them illegal.

“We believe that this is a double-edged sword and that in many ways these sanctions will be counterproductive to the interests of the countries that implement them. Moscow has enough experience in mitigating the impact of such sanctions,” he said.

The US has sanctioned more than 4,000 Russian individuals and companies since February 2022, when the special military operation in Ukraine began.

The EU, UK, Canada, Japan and several other countries have also imposed similar sanctions on Russia.
