The so-called Moments updates for Windows 11 brought us exciting news throughout 2023 such as a new taskbar optimized for 2-in-1 devices, a modernized system tray, many improvements to accessibility, improvements to the widget panel, the implementation of the AI-based assistant Copilot, a new design of File Explorer, improvements to applications (Notepad, Microsoft Store, Paint or Clippings)…

AI is one of the highlights of Windows in the future.

All of this, however, pales in comparison to what we can expect in 2024. Despite the departure of Panos Panay, now former head of the Windows division, Microsoft's commitment to its operating system is unquestionable.

This year, Microsoft plans to launch what could be called Windows 12, codenamed Hudson Valley. It’s a major update with a major focus on integrating AI deeply into the operating system. AI is the talk of 2023, with every company focusing on this buzzy new technology. Microsoft is leading the way in the new space thanks to its partnership with OpenAI, and that’s showing up in excellent products like Copilot.

Microsoft is also said to be working on a future version of Windows with better security and faster updates called CorePC. This initiative allows Windows to scale better to different devices while still supporting legacy applications. CorePC is built from the ground up and focuses on performance, security, and modularity. According to sources, Microsoft could launch the first version of CorePC this year with the hope of replacing Windows in the not too distant future and ChromeOS becoming a competitor to this Microsoft product.

Micorsoft will make more efforts to make the operating system better.

Another issue that Windows users can’t ignore in 2024 is ARM. After years of living in the shadow of Apple and its excellent ARM chips, it looks like Windows will finally have a weapon to fight back, the new Snapdragon X Elite chip from Qualcomm. It’s an ideal chip for laptops and 2-in-1s thanks to its excellent power efficiency without sacrificing performance.

Overall, Windows 12, CorePC, AI, and ARM are the most notable issues for Microsoft's operating system in 2024. The future of the platform is entrusted to them, but will everything be successful? The answer will be given in the next 12 months.
