Fearing being abandoned by Man Utd, Onana did not join the Cameroon team

According to The Sun , Onana will be absent from Cameroon's squad for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper surprised coach Erik Ten Hag when he decided to return to the Cameroon team even though he had previously announced his retirement after the 2022 World Cup.

With the trust of coach Rigobert Song, goalkeeper Andre Onana has played 3 matches and helped Cameroon qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations which will take place in January 2024.

However, Onana's poor performance for Man Utd this season has forced him to consider giving up his return to the Cameroon national team to protect his number one position in goal for the Old Trafford team.

If he plays for Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations, Onana will miss six of the Red Devils' matches and the starting position will be given to Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayinider. It is likely that coach Ten Hag will also put Onana on the bench if he does not play regularly for Man Utd.

"We are happy with our goalkeepers. They have to compete for places. We are very happy with Altay Bayinider, who is doing very well, he just needs to be patient to get the number one position.

If he works well and continues to improve, he will have his chance and he will have to take it," coach Ten Hag once made a statement that made Onana feel worried.

In the 5th round of the UEFA Champions League Group A match against Galatasaray, Onana was heavily criticized for being the culprit for two out of three goals that Man Utd conceded, causing the "Red Devils" to regrettably share points at RAMS Park.

Coach Ten Hag's team has only won 4 points after 5 matches, ranked bottom of Group A and the chance of getting a ticket to the 1/8 round of the Champions League is very slim.

In the final match, Man Utd must win against the top team Bayern Munich and hope the match between Copenhagen and Galatasaray ends in a draw.
