Review of the teacher who failed the student in Music

VnExpressVnExpress10/06/2023

Gia Lai A teacher was asked to be disciplined after many parents complained about their children failing the Music subject.

On June 10, the Department of Education and Training of Pleiku City announced the conclusion of the case of Ms. Nguyen Do Thi Bao Tran, a music teacher at Cu Chinh Lan Primary School, who was complained by parents for "failing" many students in this subject.

Accordingly, Ms. Tran has a complete lesson plan, without cutting any program content. However, the female teacher does not have a plan to train and help students to complete the subject. The quality of music education in some classes does not meet the target that the female teacher committed to at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.

In addition, during this school year and the previous year, she arbitrarily corrected the academic results of 75 students (raising, lowering, and correcting comments). Among them, some students had their scores raised or lowered multiple times.

In the 2022-2023 school year alone, Ms. Tran edited the second semester Music subject results 80 times for 58 students. All without reporting to the principal.

According to the Department of Education and Training, when parents reacted, the female teacher responded via social media with offensive words and language that did not meet the ethical standards of a teacher.

Therefore, this agency recommended that Cu Chinh Lan Primary School review the female teacher and correct the issues mentioned in the conclusion, according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Responding to VnExpress, Ms. Tran said that the conclusion of the City Department of Education and Training was not objective. She affirmed that she had performed her duties correctly, had a teaching plan, had a student assessment monitoring book, and coordinated with the homeroom teacher, parents, and students during the teaching process.

This teacher admitted to editing the students’ results on the school’s grading system. However, this was done after reviewing the student’s logbook to match the actual results, evaluating them in the direction of student progress and encouraging and motivating them in the subject.

Ms. Bao Tran is the only Music teacher for nearly 800 students at Cu Chinh Lan Primary School. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school has 9 students who have not completed the Music program. In previous years, this number was 10-15 students. These students have to retake the course during the summer. According to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, based on the results of this training, schools decide whether to let students move up to the next grade or not.

At the end of May, many parents sent petitions to all levels. They said that Ms. Tran was not proactive in teaching and had poor communication skills, which made it difficult for students to understand the lesson content and develop the skills to keep up with the requirements. In addition, the testing and evaluation were not objective, so they could not create consensus, causing frustration for students.

Currently, the assessment of primary school students is carried out according to Circular No. 27/2020 of the Ministry of Education and Training. Through many methods such as observation, product assessment, questioning, writing..., teachers will assess the progress and learning outcomes of students according to the requirements of the program. The four assessment levels are: Excellent completion, good completion, completion and incomplete.
