When teachers are 'bullied' on social networks

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên27/11/2023

It is not known whether the incident is right or wrong, but with the explosion of social networks, schools and teachers easily become the focus of criticism from the online community.

" TEACHERS OFTEN DON'T HAVE THE CHANCE TO EXPLAIN"

Ms. NTL, a teacher who has worked for 5 years at HNH Kindergarten, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the camera in the classroom is convenient for parents to monitor how their children are learning and playing, no matter where they are; but there are many situations that make them both laugh and cry. "The camera only has images but no sound. The images on the camera can be faster than normal or slower than reality, possibly due to the internet connection, so if parents only look at the camera, they may misunderstand the teacher. For example, the teacher is walking normally, but through the camera, it sometimes looks like the teacher is pulling the child quickly. One of my colleagues had parents call the principal to ask why the teacher was "pulling" the child," Ms. NTL said.

The teacher also said that usually, when young parents have concerns or are unclear about classroom activities, they meet with the teacher or work with the school so that both parties can discuss. Teachers are not always right, and parents' opinions are not always correct. But what Ms. L. fears most is when parents do not find out right or wrong, just look at the camera or listen to their children tell stories and hastily post articles on Facebook accusing teachers. "That way, parents do not give teachers a chance to explain," Ms. L. said.

A kindergarten owner in Ho Chi Minh City shared with Thanh Nien reporter that she used to be a kindergarten teacher so she completely understands and sympathizes with the situation that teachers often face when attacked on social networks.

"I have also experienced similar problems when I was inexperienced, lacked professional capacity and had difficulty solving problems and controlling personal pressure. During difficult times, I was willing to quit my job to reduce pressure, instead of facing that difficult situation," said the school owner.

WHAT TO DO TO PROTECT TEACHERS?

Mr. Nguyen Tuan, owner of a kindergarten in Ho Chi Minh City, said that in addition to salary and benefits, teachers need a favorable working environment. Teachers need support, listening, and sharing of difficulties at work from the school board; at the same time, frank comments from parents, before being "cyber-attacked".

"If teachers are not protected, their enthusiasm will gradually erode. Dedicated teachers will gradually have to leave their profession, their podiums, and their students to find less stressful career options," Mr. Tuan confided.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Chi, founder of Little Saigon Kindergarten, Ho Chi Minh City, said that from her experiences of facing "bullying" by parents on social networks, she realized the importance of training and developing herself in the face of social challenges.

According to Ms. Kim Chi, for teachers, it is necessary to improve professional skills, problem-solving ability and pressure management. In this way, teachers can face challenges more confidently and effectively.

"Teachers need to focus not only on improving their knowledge and skills, but also on building a professional image and creating a positive educational environment. Building good relationships, listening and understanding from both sides is the key to solving any problem right from the start," said Ms. Kim Chi.

At the same time, to protect teachers, the cooperation of both parents and schools is needed. According to Ms. Kim Chi, parents contribute to building a positive environment by participating in the educational process of their children. Parents can participate in activities with the school to understand and respect the work of teachers.

As for schools, from the perspective of managers, it is necessary to develop serious policies for both teachers and parents to solve problems from the beginning, control information on the internet as well as protect the reputation of teachers and schools. "Schools need to encourage positive interactions between teachers and parents through meetings and effective communication. Support from the school helps teachers and parents feel more motivated in the process of supporting children's development," Ms. Kim Chi shared.

PARENTS SHOULD NOT ABUSE SOCIAL NETWORKS

Meanwhile, lawyer Le Trung Phat, Director of Le Trung Phat Law Firm, Ho Chi Minh City Bar Association, said that parents should not abuse social networks to attack, offend, and negatively affect the reputation and honor of teachers and schools.

Lawyer Phat said that education is a rather sensitive and special environment, where teachers need to be respected and not psychologically affected in order for them to do well in their role of educating people. "As a parent, when discovering problems happening in class or at school that parents believe are affecting their children, parents first need to contact the teacher and the school to discuss in a receptive spirit to create the best environment for their students. When parents have given their opinions and suggestions, but the teacher and the school still deliberately maintain those mistakes, parents need to work with the Department of Education and Training, the Department of Education and Training, and competent authorities, within the framework of the law," said lawyer Phat.

Defamation of others may be punishable by fine,
criminal prosecution

According to lawyer Le Trung Phat, depending on the severity of the act, a person who defames another person may be subject to administrative sanctions or criminal prosecution, specifically:

Administrative sanctions according to the provisions of Clause 1, Article 101 of Decree 15/2020 with fines from 5 to 10 million VND for individuals and 10 to 20 million VND for violating organizations.

In cases where the purpose is to seriously insult the dignity, honor or cause damage to the legitimate rights and interests of others, one may be prosecuted for "crime of humiliating others" under Article 155 with the penalty being a warning, a fine of 10 - 30 million VND, non-custodial reform for up to 3 years, or imprisonment from 3 months to 5 years. Or for the crime of slander under Article 156 of the 2015 Penal Code with the penalty being a fine of 10 - 50 million VND, non-custodial reform for up to 2 years, or imprisonment from 3 months to 7 years.
