Intel undervalues AMD CPU naming

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/12/2023

According to Neowin , Intel is focusing on AMD’s mobile products, specifically the Ryzen 7020 series and its complicated branding scheme. The company compared the Zen 2-based Ryzen 5 7520U to a “snakehead” in an attempt to hint at the “half-truth” that these processors bring.

AMD accused of using confusing naming conventions for customers

Intel essentially focused on how AMD often continues to use older technology to offer customers cheaper products — a great strategy for customers who are on a budget or don’t need the latest and greatest. The problem is, Intel argues that AMD’s recent rebranding not only confuses but also makes old technology look new. For example, Intel claims that the Ryzen 5 7520U is based on the outdated Zen 2 architecture from 2019, but many people think it’s a higher-end chip from 2022.

Intel compared the AMD 7520U to the Core i5-1335U, where the Intel CPU scored 83% better in the CrossMark benchmark run by BapCo, emphasizing that “newest doesn’t always mean newest.”

According to Intel, many unsuspecting customers might assume that the Ryzen 5 7520U is the latest product simply because it has the number 7 in its name, like the latest AM5 CPUs. In fact, only the third number denotes the architecture behind it, and it's very difficult to spot.

Decoding the Naming Syntax on AMD Ryzen CPUs

Here's how to decode AMD's confusing processor names:

  • The first number represents the year of release: 7 - 2022, 8 - 2023, 9 - 2024…
  • The second number indicates the market segment: 1 and 2 - Athlon, 3 and 4 - Ryzen 3…
  • The third number refers to the architecture: 2 - Zen 2, 3 - Zen 3, 4 - Zen 4…
  • The fourth number is for feature differentiation: 0 - lower, 5 - higher.
  • Letters represent TDP and form factor: U - ultrabook, HS - gaming...

Therefore, users can translate AMD Ryzen 5 7520U as a mid-range Zen 2 processor released in 2022 for ultrabooks with a TDP of 15-28W.

AMD positions the Ryzen 7320 CPU as aimed at budget-friendly systems and featuring a more advanced iGPU. However, Intel counters this argument by claiming that “the future of education and learning depends on the latest technology,” adding that the Intel Core i3-N305 offers faster performance in standard tasks and music or photo editing.
