“To be awarded the Gold Star Order after April 30, 1975 requires very special contributions to the country” - that is the affirmation of Professor Carl Thayer, from the Australian Defense Academy, University of New South Wales, in an interview with a Vietnam News Agency reporter in Australia about the role and contributions of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to the Party, State and people of Vietnam in building and developing the country, caring for people's lives, building and rectifying the Party, and fighting corruption.

Professor Carl Thayer commented that during his time leading the Communist Party of Vietnam, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has achieved great achievements, including the anti-corruption campaign that he launched and has been maintained to the present time.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong once declared that “there are no forbidden zones, no exceptions in preventing and combating corruption and negativity,” and reality shows that the “furnace-burning” campaign launched by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has eliminated many corrupt officials and held accountable leaders, even at the highest levels.

Professor Carl Thayer affirmed that with the "burning furnace" campaign of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Vietnam has achieved significant and noteworthy progress in eliminating corruption.

Professor Carl Thayer also believes that “burning the furnace” is only part of a larger project of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, which is to build and rectify the Party, put virtuous and talented people in the Party's high-ranking leadership ranks, and resolutely eliminate those who are no longer worthy of the people's trust, and these are strategic decisions.

The General Secretary has changed many Party regulations, including two particularly important aspects: what Party members should and should not do, clearly indicating directions for action, and emphasizing that Vietnam is a rule-of-law state under the leadership of the Communist Party.

Besides, Professor Carl Thayer said that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has made valuable contributions to Vietnam's foreign policy.

He built the legitimacy and prestige of the Communist Party of Vietnam and its leaders in meetings with leaders of countries around the world.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong had meetings with US President Joe Biden, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi... and it is worth mentioning that in the joint statements issued after the meetings, the countries all expressed respect for Vietnam's political system.

According to Professor Carl Thayer, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has left a prominent mark in the field of foreign affairs when he used the term “bamboo diplomacy” with the image of “solid roots, soft trunk, flexible branches and leaves” of a bamboo tree to describe Vietnam’s foreign policy approach of “having more friends, fewer enemies.”

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is steadfast in defending socialism in Vietnam, independence and autonomy, but is also very realistic in promoting national interests.

Professor Carl Thayer said that Vietnam has made many important decisions in recent times, including strengthening and upgrading relations with South Korea, the US, Japan and Australia to the highest level, which is the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Regarding the Australia-Vietnam relationship, Professor Carl Thayer said that this relationship has received support from two major parties in the Australian political system and is considered a pinnacle achievement, because the interests of the two countries converge, and it is impossible not to mention the positive contributions of a large number of Vietnamese people living, working and studying in Australia to the bilateral relationship./.
