Data from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) also shows that 6.3 million people are on the brink of famine, the highest number ever recorded in Sudan.

In response, WFP has planned to provide emergency food and nutrition assistance to some 6.5 million people, but limited humanitarian access has hampered these plans.

WFP has provided essential food to more than 3 million people since conflict broke out in Sudan. Without assistance, people are at risk of falling into even more poverty and famine, according to WFP.

Fighting between the Sudanese army and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has lasted for months, killing more than 9,000 people and forcing more than 5.6 million to flee their homes.

More than 8,000 people fled Sudan to neighboring Chad in the past week alone, according to a new report from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The number is likely to be an underestimate, due to problems registering new arrivals.

Saudi Arabia said on November 7 that warring parties in Sudan had made no progress toward a ceasefire after the latest round of peace talks in Jeddah.
