Exam Council entered wrong score, failed candidate becomes 'valedictorian of 10th grade'

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên08/10/2024

On October 8, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Dung, Chief Inspector of the Department of Education and Training of Thanh Hoa , said that the case of a 10th grade student of Le Hong Phong High School (Bim Son Town, Thanh Hoa) who went from passing to failing the 10th grade entrance exam has been inspected and clarified by this unit.

This student was also the valedictorian when the admission score for grade 10 at Le Hong Phong High School for the 2024-2025 school year was announced.

According to Mr. Dung, after receiving a complaint about a 10th grade student of Le Hong Phong High School achieving an unusually high score in the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2024-2025 school year, while the student's ability was normal, the Inspectorate of the Thanh Hoa Department of Education and Training inspected and clarified.

Specifically, the 10th grade entrance exam scores of this student when announced as successful (transcript) were: 8 points in math; 8.5 points in literature; 6.4 points in English (all scores without coefficients). However, when the test was conducted, the test scores of this candidate were only 4.5 points in math; 6.5 points in literature; and 2.4 points in English.

Based on the admission score to Le Hong Phong High School for the 2024-2025 school year, this student did not have enough points to pass the 10th grade entrance exam. Therefore, the Admissions Council of Le Hong Phong High School announced that the student was not admitted and was forced to stop studying.

Regarding the cause of the above incident, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Dung said that the inspection team had verified and determined that the cause was due to the scoring team of the Examination Council, Ngoc Lac High School, incorrectly scoring the exam.

The Ngoc Lac High School Examination Board also explained that the reason for the wrong score was due to work pressure and lack of concentration during the working process, which led to the wrong score being recorded.

Members of the Ngoc Lac High School Examination Board also confirmed that the mistake in recording the exam score for the above student was "completely unintentional".
