Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (HCMC) recently organized a gratitude and maturity program for nearly 700 grade 12 students on the morning and evening of May 22, starting with performances by students. Notable among them was a musical by the 12TH class recreating the humorous confrontation between two famous football players Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. "For the last performance at school, we want to bring the most unconventional and childish things like the personality of the class. Hopefully in the future, you will always be successful and happy no matter where you are," Lam Vinh Hong (seated, right) whispered.
This year, for the first time, the final year students of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School experienced the "Water Balloon Festival" inspired by Thailand's Songkran festival. With thousands of water balloons and pre-prepared "equipment" such as buckets, basins and water guns, the students had moments of "extremely" cooling off after a stressful year of studying for the upcoming high school graduation exam.
The activity attracted the enthusiastic participation of both male and female students. The cheers were incessant, and chases also continuously took place throughout the school yard.
The last day at school is also an opportunity for grade 12 students to leave behind precious memories with their close friends and juniors, in the uniform that has accompanied them for the past 3 years.
After the lunch break, the official gratitude and coming-of-age ceremony took place in the evening with the participation of parents and teachers. Outside the gate, the organizers set up a photo booth with a model of the moon and clouds for everyone to record their final year memories. "This year's program takes the theme of Dream 2023 with the hope that you will realize your dreams and ambitions as students," Nguyen Ngoc To Han (class 12A2), a member of the organizing committee, shared.
In the first part of the ceremony, the 12th grade students will pin red roses on their parents’ shirts to show their gratitude for their hard work over the past 18 years. Many parents could not contain their emotions when listening to their children’s sincere thanks.
Students also took advantage of the last minute to sign shirts and exchange autographs with each other.
Math teacher Do Khanh Giang was moved in the arms of his students after 30 years of working at the school. This is also the last generation of students that Mr. Giang taught before retiring. "2023 is a very special class of students as we have overcome the Covid-19 pandemic together. On this occasion, I would like to send my students a motto, 'What doesn't defeat you will make you stronger'", Mr. Giang confided.
The gratitude and coming of age ceremony also witnessed a special duet between female student Nguyen Ngoc Truc Ly (12A7) and her mother. After completing the two songs Mother's Love and Mother's Dream , the female student burst into tears when she sang for the first time to her parents in front of a crowd. "I thank my family so much for always accompanying and supporting me for the past 18 years," Ly confided.
Giving ribbons is also a meaningful activity in the program. "Blue symbolizes friendship, green is for those who want to make up, purple is for teachers, and pink is for your special person. With such meaningful colors, we hope to create special emotions for class 12 this year," said Nguyen Quy Tue Minh (class 12A11).
Closing the gratitude and maturity ceremony was the candle-passing activity, which conveyed enthusiasm, affection and faith in the future ahead. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Chuong, Principal of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, lit the first candle to pass down to the students representing the class.
"The moment I remember most is when everyone held flickering candles in their hands. Some classes sang the last verses, some cried when they were about to say goodbye here, and many stories that had never been told were expressed under the warm light. I hope that forever after, the enthusiasm of class 12 will still burn like today's candle," Tran Ngoc Song Ngan (class 12A4) confided.
As the ceremony neared its end, the excitement died down, leaving room for moments of tears.
Parents enjoy seeing yearbooks filled with youthful memories made by students themselves.
At the moment of saying goodbye to school, 12th grade students of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School experienced many emotions, from sobbing in the arms of friends to excitedly singing loudly.
Established in 1913, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School is the second oldest school in Ho Chi Minh City. At first, purple ao dai was used as the official uniform, so the school was called Ao Tim Girls' School. In 1953, the school was renamed Gia Long Girls' High School, and in 1975, it received its current name.
Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School will celebrate its 110th anniversary this November. Mr. Nguyen Van Ba, Youth Assistant, said the school will organize many activities to celebrate this special occasion, such as inaugurating the Ho Chi Minh Cultural Space, carrying out the clean wall project, renovating and decorating the sports complex, and building a digitalized traditional room. "The school will also organize demonstration teaching, scientific research, and movement activities with the participation of both teachers and students," said Mr. Ba.
