Students get acquainted with AI, develop digital citizenship skills

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important and widely applied, including in the field of education. In Dong Nai, many schools have begun to introduce students to AI and instruct them on how to use AI to serve their studies. Digital citizenship skills are also included in the curriculum from primary school.

Depending on the actual conditions of each educational institution, "AI popularization" and "digital literacy" are carried out at different levels.

Peaceful paintings from AI's strokes

Using Microsoft's Bing Image Creator tool, Le Thanh Hai, class 5/2, Nguyen An Ninh Primary School (Tan Mai Ward, Bien Hoa City), wrote a prompt (command) for this AI application to draw a picture on his behalf with the theme "I love peace". It is a picture of a large number of soldiers and people gathered together under a "forest" of red flags with yellow stars fluttering in the wind, around them are doves spreading their wings.

Not only Thanh Hai, on April 12, many students from 36 primary schools in Bien Hoa city experienced the activity of drawing pictures using AI in the STEM Festival. True to the slogan of the experience "Your ideas - AI's drawings", depending on their own ideas and imagination, each student will write different commands and create different pictures in just a few minutes. With this tool, even students who "have no knack for drawing" but have good creative ideas can still create satisfactory and different works.

Previously, many students in Dong Nai used AI technology to create comics and make video clips. By also coming up with ideas and writing commands, AI applications can replace humans in drawing a comic book and making a video clip with complete content.

Ms. NGUYEN THI THU LINH said: “AI is currently being used by students, teachers and experts in the education sector. AI is gradually changing the way of teaching and learning, helping students access knowledge flexibly. In particular, AI also brings fair learning opportunities to all students. However, if used incorrectly, AI can make students dependent, affecting creative thinking. Some information from AI may be inaccurate. Therefore, it is necessary to use AI in combination with traditional learning methods so that technology can truly become a sustainable support tool for education.”

Not only stopping at the familiarization and experience steps, some schools have made AI content a regular learning activity so that students understand AI and know how to use AI in many fields, typically Lac Hong Bilingual Primary - Secondary - High School (Buu Long ward, Bien Hoa city).

According to Mr. Phan Quang Vinh, the school's principal, AI robotics is one of the STEM activities that the school has implemented for the past 2 years. Accordingly, all students from grades 1 to 9 will study one lesson about AI robotics every week. For high school level, due to career orientation, students who choose subjects related to information technology will study this content.

In the coming time, Lac Hong Bilingual Primary, Secondary and High School will continue to familiarize students with AI by combining it with other educational activities, especially Information Technology.

In the public school sector, Tam Phuoc Secondary School (Tam Phuoc Ward, Bien Hoa City) has held many training sessions, instructing students to use AI to serve their studies and movement activities. More than 2,000 students of the school have Microsoft's AI Copilot education accounts, which are also AI accounts for students to participate in digital schools. The school has trained and instructed students on how to use AI to serve their studies, in movement activities and to participate in competitions and contests. Of which, 2 students won the B and C prizes, group B of the AI Comic and Video Clip Creation Contest organized by the Department of Information and Communications (now the Department of Science and Technology) and the Provincial Youth Union in October 2024.

To make every student a digital citizen

Through multi-level approaches, students have begun to have initial understanding of AI and how to use AI for learning, as well as other purposes in daily life. However, how to use AI to ensure effectiveness, the right purpose and not to be dependent on AI is a matter of concern.

Teacher Nguyen Thi Thu Linh, Head of the Math - IT Department, Tam Phuoc Secondary School, participated in the training course on Improving Digital Capacity for General Teachers organized by the Ministry of Education and Training in September 2024. After this training course, Ms. Linh re-deployed it to teachers in the province, and was also a reporter for many training courses, instructing students on how to use AI.

Accordingly, students are guided on how to write commands so that AI can understand and use the provided resources to answer the questions that students need to learn. Ms. Linh also provides sample commands so that students understand how to write effective commands.

According to Ms. Linh, students who start using AI should use virtual assistants for education; should focus on the structure of commands and questions with full components: role, context, task assignment, template, tone... To ensure information security, do not disclose authentic information about yourself to avoid risks, information theft...

“In the computer science program, students learn basic programming tools like Scratch so they can directly experiment with AI. AI is not perfect, and students always need critical thinking to evaluate. Let's take advantage of AI to personalize learning effectively,” Ms. Linh shared.

Using AI is just one of the many skills of a digital citizen. This is being implemented by the education sector and starting from primary school.

In October 2024, the Department of Education and Training issued an official dispatch on the implementation of digital citizenship skills education at primary school level from the 2024-2025 school year. In particular, the content of universalizing digital skills and network safety and security, open platforms, and open source software will be included in the curriculum from primary school level to form the necessary skills for digital citizens early. Equipping digital citizenship skills helps students have the skills and capacity to study, live and work safely and effectively in an increasingly developing digital environment.

Implementing the “Digital Education for All” Movement, the Department of Science and Technology has organized many training sessions related to AI applications for officials and civil servants. Director of the Department of Science and Technology Ta Quang Truong said that in the coming time, the department will coordinate with the Department of Education and Training to organize training programs for officials, teachers and eventually students of schools in the province.

To become digital citizens, students need to know how to protect personal data, avoid fake news and use the internet safely. They can interact with AI and the digital environment to effectively serve self-study; increase the use of AI to design technology products such as images, videos, and comics to develop creative thinking. Technology as well as AI virtual assistants are always developing every day, students need to proactively learn continuously to keep up with the development of the digital world.
