(Dan Tri) - Many people install surveillance cameras in sensitive locations such as bedrooms, changing rooms, etc. without knowing that images from the cameras can be hacked, stolen, and spread by bad guys.

More and more households, government agencies, schools and hospitals are choosing to install surveillance cameras to ensure security and monitor activities.

Among them, IP Camera (Internet Protocol camera) is becoming popular thanks to its ability to record and view live over the Internet.

However, few people expect that these convenient devices pose a potential risk of being hacked and their content easily viewed.

Serious security flaw in cameras from leading vendor

Noam Moshe, a security researcher, conducted an in-depth study of surveillance cameras manufactured by Axis Communications (Sweden).

Axis Communications is one of the world's largest providers of surveillance cameras, serving many government agencies, schools, hospitals, and Fortune 500 companies. This means that the images captured by Axis Communications cameras are extremely important.

However, Noam Moshe has continuously discovered security holes in Axis Communications' camera management software, allowing hackers to easily break in and steal content.

Immediately after discovering the flaw, he contacted Axis Communications and received a response within 10 minutes. Although the company quickly released a patch, Moshe believes that more vulnerabilities will emerge in the future.

“My day job is to find security vulnerabilities on every device and publish them responsibly. This is my playground,” Noam Moshe shared.

Potential risks and advice for users

In addition to Axis Communications, Noam Moshe is continuing to look for security vulnerabilities in many other devices, especially surveillance cameras, because he believes that products from many other companies also have similar weaknesses.

According to Moshe, it is not complicated for a surveillance camera to be hacked and its content stolen by bad guys, and the process is simpler than many people think.

The research by Noam Moshe and colleagues, presented at the “Black Hat Security Conference,” has raised concerns in the context of surveillance cameras becoming very popular and widely used, even in households.

To ensure safety and privacy, experts recommend that users should not install surveillance cameras in private and sensitive places such as bedrooms and dressing rooms.

Because if the camera is hacked and monitored remotely, sensitive content can be leaked, causing serious consequences.
