In the trend of promoting sustainable and effective rural economic development, since the end of 2024, Nam Tam commune, Lai Chau province has coordinated with Lai Chau Agricultural Services Company Limited to deploy a model of linking LC2025 sugarcane cultivation on ineffective upland land. In order for the model to be put into practice, local authorities and enterprises have conducted field surveys, propagated and mobilized people to convert crop structure to LC2025 sugarcane cultivation in the direction of linking enterprises and people. In which, the enterprise supports 100% advance payment of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and transfer of cultivation techniques, and payment must be made only at harvest time.
Mr. Tan A Long's family, in Nam Cha village, Nam Tam commune, is the first household to participate in the LC2025 sugarcane growing model, with an area of over 1 hectare, said: "Previously, on this upland land, my family only grew cassava, because the land was bad, we couldn't grow any other crops effectively. Now that there is a business supporting sugarcane growing, my family is ready to participate. We just need to plant, take care of it, and when it's time to harvest, the business will buy the product for us, so my family is very secure."
After the first sugarcane crop, many local households saw the effectiveness of the LC2025 sugarcane growing model, so they also registered to participate in this model.
Sugarcane variety LC2025 grows well when planted in Nam Tam commune
Ms. Tan Thi Tach, in Nam Chang village, Nam Tam commune, said: “My family has more than 1 hectare of upland, every year I only grow one crop of corn, then leave the land fallow, the upland soil is only grown once. When I saw them doing a sugarcane growing model, I signed up to participate in growing. After a period of planting and caring for it according to the instructions of the staff, I saw that the sugarcane grew quite well, better than growing corn.”
The sugarcane cultivation linkage model in the commune initially helped people in Nam Tam commune change their production mindset. Instead of small-scale, spontaneous farming as before, people applied technical advances and proactively participated in the linkage model according to the value chain from production to consumption. This is a sustainable direction for agricultural restructuring today.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh, Director of Lai Chau Agricultural Services Company Limited, shared: “Before implementing the LC2025 sugarcane growing model in Nam Tam commune, we carefully researched the soil and climate conditions and found that it was suitable for this sugarcane variety. We continued to coordinate with the local government to propagate and mobilize the people, so that they would trust and agree to cooperate with the enterprise.”
The company commits to purchasing all raw sugarcane products from farmers at market prices; there is a price insurance policy of 1,050 - 1,100 VND/kg to help farmers feel secure in production. If the model gives positive results, the company is ready to expand the association and continue to invest in this model on a larger scale, Ms. Anh said.
Sugarcane harvest in Lai Chau
After the first harvest, the leaders of Nam Tam commune also organized an evaluation of the effectiveness of the model, showing that the economic value of the LC2025 sugarcane growing model was higher than that of other crops, and they were assured of the product output. Therefore, the People's Committee of Nam Tam commune encouraged businesses and people to continue to cooperate to expand the scale of production throughout the commune.
Up to now, the LC2025 sugarcane growing model on ineffective upland and hilly land has promoted its superior values in Nam Tam commune, making people trust and willing to participate enthusiastically in the linkage model, thereby creating a sustainable development direction, while increasing economic value on the same unit area, towards sustainable agricultural commodity production in the locality.
