The artificial intelligence system, developed by scientists at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology (under the Agency for Science, Technology and Research - A*), can help doctors diagnose the risk of liver cancer recurrence in patients with a high rate of accuracy, through analyzing the location and distribution of five specific genes in liver tumor tissue and immune cells within the tumor.

The immune cells known as natural killer (NK) cells are a type of white blood cell that destroys diseased cells, including cancer cells. Low numbers of NK cells are an important indicator of a higher risk of cancer recurrence, added Dr. Joe Yeong, a scientist at Singapore General Hospital.

In addition, by accurately calculating the location and distribution of natural killer cells in comparison with cancer cells, it is possible to evaluate the ability and effectiveness of the cancer cell destruction process. From there, doctors can make early and highly accurate diagnoses, far surpassing the traditional methods currently used. This helps save time, costs and significantly improve treatment outcomes for patients.

The researchers evaluated the reliability of the AI system, based on the analysis of samples from more than 200 patients from five hospitals in Singapore and China. The team will continue to conduct in-depth analysis and evaluation at the Singapore General Hospital and the National Cancer Center Singapore by the end of 2025.

Doctors at Singapore General Hospital emphasized that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fourth most common cancer in men in Singapore, with an incidence of about 20/100,000 Singaporeans each year. Notably, about 70% of treated patients are at risk of recurrence within 5 years.
