The Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock of Cam Xuyen District donated mustard seeds for people in Tan An village, Cam Binh commune to plant alongside winter corn.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dung (Tan An village, Cam Binh commune, Cam Xuyen) said: “Taking advantage of the free time after the rice harvest, my family boldly borrowed land from surrounding households to grow winter crops. To solve the weather problem, I used a plow to press the ridges to help drain water and prevent cold. Initially, I and some households here started to sow 2.5 hectares of sweet corn. By December 2023, when the corn is ready for harvest, we will return the land to the people so that they can sow winter-spring rice.”

Sweet corn production on rice fields of Tan An villagers is a pilot model of Cam Binh commune in the winter crop production project in 2023. If successful, the locality will replicate it in many other areas to increase value and improve economic efficiency on the same field. In addition to implementing the pilot model, Cam Binh commune is currently directing people to focus on winter vegetable production in 110 hectares of household gardens with key crops such as: squash, cucumber, sweet melon, bitter melon, mustard greens, etc.

Considering the winter crop as the main crop that brings high economic efficiency to farmers, at this time, many localities across the province are focusing on implementing production instructions. In the specialized vegetable growing area of La Xa village, Tan Lam Huong commune (Thach Ha), people are taking advantage of favorable weather to bring seedlings to the planting beds.

Mr. Pham Van De (in La Xa village, Tan Lam Huong commune, Thach Ha) said: “This year the weather is favorable so the winter crop will be deployed earlier. The seedlings were sown 25 days ago. Now, we are focusing on preparing the land, making beds and planting. The winter crop will be deployed earlier than last year, which also has risks. If it rains early and floods, we will have to do it again. But if the weather is favorable, this newly planted area will be ready for harvest in about a month.”

According to the Ha Tinh Sub-Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, the whole province will deploy winter crop production from August 31, 2023. Accordingly, the province determines a proactive, drastic and flexible viewpoint in directing and operating, especially in the seasonal period, to avoid and minimize risks caused by natural disasters; diversify crops, promote intensive farming, apply science and technology, and digital transformation to increase value per unit area, meet market demand, ensure food sources, and prevent hunger and cold for livestock in winter.

This winter crop, the whole province strives to plant 11,890 hectares of winter crops (equivalent to the winter crop area in 2022). Of which, there are about 4,259 hectares of corn for grain, 1,649 hectares of biomass corn, 4,524 hectares of various vegetables, and 1,458 hectares of sweet potatoes.

After planting, people use straw to cover and protect the plants.

Mr. Nguyen Tri Ha - Head of the Ha Tinh Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection said: “Through information from the provincial Hydrometeorological Station, we believe that this year the weather will be more favorable for winter crop production. The temperature will be about 0.1 degrees higher than the same period last year, heavy rains will appear late and end early, and cold spells will not be lower than previous years. Although the weather is favorable, we will also proactively arrange the sowing season and crop structure by region... to avoid natural disasters”.

Accordingly, biomass corn and corn for grain are grown in concentrated areas in the districts of Huong Son, Huong Khe, Vu Quang, Duc Tho to serve livestock farming, and at the same time provide raw materials for the Vinamik dairy company. Localities such as Thach Ha, Cam Xuyen, Ky Anh, Nghi Xuan... encourage the production of fresh corn by pure cultivation or intercropping. Sweet potato is grown in the highlands of 2-rice land, light sandy loam land in the districts of Thach Ha, Nghi Xuan, Loc Ha, Cam Xuyen... As for vegetables - tubers - fruits, they are concentrated on specialized vegetable land, 2-rice land, garden land in all districts, cities, and towns across the province.
