In the past, people in Pac Ta commune mainly cultivated food crops and vegetables, with low economic efficiency, causing many difficulties in people's lives. In the past few years, following the Agricultural Extension Program of the Agricultural Service Center of Tan Uyen district (old), people have been supported with seeds, fertilizers and technical training to develop the durian custard apple model in the commune, with initial positive results.

Mr. Nguyen Van Son, in Tan Bac village, Pac Ta commune, participated in the model and boldly converted part of the crop land area to grow 60 custard apple trees. Up to now, Mr. Son's family has seen the economic efficiency brought about by this new crop model.

“Durian custard apple is a new crop for Pac Ta commune, I was very careful when deciding to plant and care for it. Besides, I and other durian custard apple growers in the commune regularly exchange, learn and gain experience from successful models in other localities. Currently, my family's durian custard apple area has begun to bear fruit, hopefully it will bring high income in the near future,” said Mr. Son.

The family of Ms. Hoang Thi Ngan, in Tan Bac village, also participated in the model of growing custard apples, with an area of more than 4,000 square meters of rice land, converted to grow 400 custard apple trees, and up to now, all of the custard apple trees have produced fruit.

Mr. Thanh said: Growing durian is completely different from growing other food crops. You have to learn the techniques of fertilizing, spraying pesticides, watering, pruning, and wrapping the fruit very carefully. It requires you to study detailed techniques to grasp its growth and development process in order to get good results."

The durian custard apple tree has many outstanding advantages compared to other custard apple varieties. The average fruit weight is from 500 - 600g, some even over 1kg, twice as much as traditional varieties. The fruit has few seeds, thin skin, characteristic aroma, rich sweetness and eye-catching appearance, favored by the market; price from 120 - 150 thousand VND/kg.

The durian custard apple tree is a woody tree grown mainly in tropical regions. Its origin is in Taiwan, China. The leaves of the durian custard apple are thin, oval, light green on the back, growing opposite on all 4 sides of the trunk. Flowers are usually solitary or grow in clusters of 2-4 on branches or leaf axils. The flowers are light yellow, the petals are thin, thick, oval, the calyx is triangular. The fruit is large, averaging about 1kg to 2.5kg/fruit, the flesh is very firm and has few seeds, the skin is thin and sweet. Taiwanese durian custard apple is easy to grow, easy to flower, bear fruit and can be harvested all year round, with economic efficiency.

According to local people, durian custard apple is suitable for the climate and soil in Pac Ta, so this crop grows quite well, promising to bring bumper crops to the people, while creating a key crop in the local economic development. Up to now, many families in Pac Ta commune continue to expand the area of durian custard apple quite strongly.

Facing the trend of converting crop structure to durian custard apple in the locality, Pac Ta commune authorities also propagate and mobilize people to expand the cultivated area, and actively ask for experience and techniques in cultivating this variety of tree, to achieve the highest economic efficiency. At the same time, Pac Ta commune People's Committee also actively invites businesses and cooperatives to invest in growing fruit trees. In particular, focusing on converting ineffective agricultural land to grow high-quality fruit trees, including durian custard apple trees.

Durian grown on upland land

Up to now, the area of fruit trees in the commune has reached more than 162 hectares, of which more than 5,000 square meters are durian custard apples. Because the economic value of durian custard apple trees is relatively large and they are new crops, the People's Committee of the commune has assigned specialized staff to accompany the people from the planting and care stages to increase efficiency.

Aiming to develop concentrated commodity agriculture with high economic value, Pac Ta commune has been accompanying the people to exploit the maximum advantages and diversify new crops with high economic value. We believe that with their boldness and daring to innovate, farmers in Pac Ta will successfully implement a new economic model from the durian custard apple variety, enriching their families and their hometown.
