The conference was attended by representatives of more than 160 UNCLOS member states, representatives of agencies established under the convention, and representatives of a number of international organizations and non-governmental organizations.
Speaking at the conference on June 15, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga - Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, highlighted the importance of the East Sea to peace, security and development in the region and the world, emphasizing that maintaining peace, stability, security and safety of navigation and aviation, and cooperation in the sustainable use of the East Sea are of great importance to countries in the region in particular and the international community in general. Vietnam actively cooperates with countries through bilateral and multilateral forums on marine environmental protection; marine scientific research; maritime and aviation security and safety; search and rescue; responding to emergencies and negative impacts of climate change, and combating crime in the East Sea.
Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga emphasized that Vietnam has been closely cooperating with regional countries in implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and building a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC). Vietnam calls on relevant parties not to take actions that complicate the situation and increase tensions in the region, to respect diplomatic and legal processes, to resolve disputes by peaceful means, on the basis of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, to seriously and effectively implement the DOC and soon complete the COC.
