Việt NamViệt Nam23/08/2024

General Secretary and President To Lam has just successfully concluded his state visit to China, thereby making an important contribution to bringing Vietnam-China relations to a new height.

This is the first state visit to China, and also the first foreign visit of General Secretary and President To Lam in his capacity as head of the Party and State of Vietnam. Therefore, this is a very important visit, demonstrating the importance and top priority of both sides to consolidate and develop the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, building a Community of Shared Future Vietnam - China of strategic significance.

During high-level meetings and contacts, especially during the talks between General Secretary and President of Vietnam To Lam and General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping, both sides especially emphasized this.

Affirming that Vietnam is a priority direction in China's foreign policy, General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping also said that this is an important time for the two countries to bring bilateral relations to a new level, going deeper and more substantive in all aspects.

In fact, the Vietnam-China relationship has been continuously consolidated and developed strongly and comprehensively in all fields, including politics, economics, trade and investment... over the past many years.

China has consistently been Vietnam's largest trading partner and its second largest export market. Vietnam is China's largest trading partner in ASEAN and China's fifth largest trading partner in the world. In 2023, total two-way trade turnover reached 171.9 billion USD.

China is also the leading foreign investor in Vietnam. By the end of July 2024, China had invested more than 28.5 billion USD in Vietnam, ranking 6th among countries and territories investing in Vietnam...

However, the potential for Vietnam-China cooperation is still huge. Therefore, high-level visits, especially the two historic visits by the top leaders of the two Parties in 2022-2023 and now, the visit to China by General Secretary and President To Lam, will open up great opportunities for the two sides to strengthen and promote more comprehensive and effective cooperation.

During the talks, the two sides agreed to work together to promote political and economic trust, effectively building a “Community of Shared Future of Strategic Significance”. The leaders of the two sides also discussed in depth major orientations to enhance trust, consolidate friendship, improve the effectiveness of substantive cooperation in all fields, maintain peace and stability at sea, and continue to develop Vietnam-China relations in a healthy, stable and sustainable manner in accordance with the motto of “16 words” and the spirit of “4 goods”.

The two sides also emphasized the importance of strengthening and promoting substantive cooperation areas, and agreed to continue to strengthen security and defense cooperation, promote economic, trade and investment cooperation, including promoting the connection of "two corridors, one belt" with the "Belt and Road", enhancing the connection of railway and road infrastructure, enhancing supply chain cooperation, economic cooperation between border provinces, and enhancing exchanges on state-owned enterprise reform, etc.

There were 14 cooperation documents between ministries, branches and localities of the two sides signed within the framework of the visit to China by General Secretary and President To Lam. These included protocols on facilitating high-quality agricultural products of Vietnam to access the Chinese market. There were also cooperation agreements in the fields of industry and trade, as well as a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Planning and Investment of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the General Department of International Development Cooperation of the People's Republic of China on promoting development cooperation projects in the fields of society and people's livelihood.

When these cooperation documents are realized, they will contribute significantly to the development of Vietnam - China relations in an increasingly stable, sustainable and long-term manner, bringing more benefits to the people of the two countries.
