Simple wish of a teacher in a remote area: Hope students eat well, sleep well, and go to school regularly

Hope students have less hardship and deprivation

From the Northwest of the country, Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen, a teacher at Trung Chai Ethnic Boarding Primary and Secondary School (Nam Nhun District, Lai Chau Province) said that in Nam Nhun District, there are currently only her and one other teacher on the staff to teach English. This forces her to frequently travel to different schools to teach combined classes with a large number of students.

Not to mention, the physical conditions at schools in the highlands are still difficult. Students and teachers still have to study in temporary, cramped classrooms, and even have to move to the cafeteria to study because there are not enough classrooms. “The cafeteria has a corrugated iron roof, and in the winter it is cold and windy, and in the summer it is hot. There are many students, even up to 90 students in some classes, making management and teaching very difficult,” said Ms. Yen.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen was honored as outstanding teacher of 2024.

Sympathizing with the students having to live and study in a difficult and deprived environment, Ms. Yen and her colleagues always encourage each other to try their best to care for and protect the students.

"On this special day of gratitude for the education sector, I only have one wish, hoping that all students have the opportunity to go to school, have adequate learning equipment and have less hardship on their journey to find knowledge," the female teacher expressed.

Go to school regularly

In the coastal area of Song Doc, Ms. Nguyen Thi Duyen, a teacher at Song Doc High School (Tran Van Thoi District, Ca Mau Province) is concerned about the complicated social evils in the locality, which make students easily attracted and provoked. In particular, most of the students here come from fishing families, many of them have to go to sea with their parents since they were young, so going to school is not an easy thing.

"To get to school, many students have to wake up very early and travel long distances. Some have to go to school by boat, canoe, or ferry near the estuary. Many days of heavy rain and strong winds, the students arrive at school soaked, some are late for school, but I have never seen them discouraged," Ms. Duyen emotionally shared.

According to the female teacher, there are still many families here who do not take education seriously, do not consider education as a struggle to find a career and future. Therefore, during the 2 decades of being a teacher, she has always been concerned and devoted to the work of propaganda, raising awareness of local people about the importance of education, so that all students can go to school fully.

“What we always want is for learning to become a necessity in the lives of the people here. So that the efforts of every student to study will be truly rewarded when they step out into the world,” Ms. Duyen expressed.

Eat well, sleep warmly, have enough school supplies

Nui To Secondary School (Tri Ton District, An Giang Province) - where teacher Chau Thi Rone is working, is a school located in a particularly difficult area, the majority of students are from poor or near-poor households, mainly living with their grandparents (because their parents work far away), so their life skills are limited. Most of the students are Khmer, still shy, hesitant, not confident in speaking up and participating in collective activities at school.

In addition to teaching, Ms. Rone is also in charge of the school's Youth Union. For her, this job is not simply organizing activities and entertainment for students, but also requires caring for and looking after the lives of students, especially those from difficult family circumstances, orphans, and those with disabilities...

"Many times I wondered if I had fulfilled my responsibility to my students. Were there any students who had to stop studying or had difficulties or psychological pressure in their studies or in their lives because I had not paid attention to them in time? Did they have enough to eat and enough to sleep every day?...", Ms. Rone expressed her concerns.

Pitying her poor students, Ms. Rone always reminded them that teachers do not need precious gifts such as flowers, presents, or material things on special holidays. What teachers need is love, politeness, and perfect scores from students.

Despite her difficult personal circumstances, with her love for her job and children, Ms. Rone said she will maintain her passion and devote herself to the education career.

Will teach with both mind and heart

For Mr. Dang Van Buu, a teacher at Hung Phong Secondary School (Giong Trom District, Ben Tre Province), happiness is not about eating well and dressing well, but about the maturity of students. "I always keep in mind that I have to overcome difficulties in the locality, overcome my own adversity to stick with the profession and accompany my beloved students," Mr. Buu shared.

The image of a teacher with a wooden crutch due to a leg injury that once made Mr. Buu feel inferior is now the motivation for many generations of students to strive to improve themselves. After 31 years in a poor oasis, thanks to the teacher's dedication and enthusiasm, History has become a lively, meaningful and proud lesson for the students here.

Mr. Buu said that many young colleagues often ask him for advice on how to teach History well. He often answers that he does not know if he has taught well or not, but he always teaches with both his mind and heart.

The hardships, fatigue, sweat and bitter tears of that simple teacher are now returned by the respect and love of generations of students and parents of Hung Phong Secondary School. And the teacher's happiness on Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20, is to see generations of students grow up and mature.
