Strengthening screening helps prevent liver cancer

According to a new report published in the world's leading medical journal The Lancet, more than 60% of liver cancer cases worldwide are preventable.

Preventative measures include expanding hepatitis B vaccination, tightening alcohol policies and increasing early screening for high-risk groups such as the obese and diabetic. Without urgent action, cases could nearly double by 2050, the year when the liver disease epidemic is expected to peak.

The situation is particularly urgent in Africa, where liver cancer cases are predicted to rise sharply. Liver cancer is considered a silent crisis that is not as well-recognized as colon or lung cancer, experts say.

Therefore, it is necessary to promote awareness raising, encourage early screening and lifestyle changes.
