Speaking at the high-level plenary session of the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU-150), National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man said that sustainable development must go hand in hand with social progress and equity. Development cannot be considered a success if a significant portion of the population is still left behind.
The National Assembly Chairman highly appreciated the theme of the session, “Parliamentary action for development and social justice”, which has extremely practical and urgent meaning in the context of the world facing unpredictable changes, from climate change to inequality and political conflicts.
The National Assembly Chairman stressed that it is necessary to ensure that all policies are aimed at narrowing the gap between rich and poor, ensuring that all people, regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity or social class, benefit from development achievements.
Towards this goal, the Vietnamese National Assembly has been making efforts to create a fair legal and policy system, promoting people's participation in the process of policy making and implementation.
Emphasizing that Vietnam is moving towards a new era of development, an era of wealth and prosperity, Chairman Tran Thanh Man affirmed that the Vietnamese National Assembly is making efforts to perfect the legal framework, promptly remove institutional shortcomings to unleash resources, apply science and technology, innovate, digital transformation, develop a green economy and convert energy to bring the country to develop quickly, strongly and sustainably, ensuring social equity.
At this conference, the National Assembly Chairman proposed a number of orientations for parliaments to strengthen international cooperation, share experiences and support each other in building development policies. Accordingly, parliaments need to take the spirit of development creation as the core in carrying out their missions. In particular, it is necessary to put the people at the center, truly affirm the nature of elected bodies, and take social justice and progress as the highest measure of development.
National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man said that no country or society can develop sustainably without putting people at the center of all policies. Therefore, the National Assembly Chairman called on all parliamentarians and all countries to take stronger actions, together building a fair, prosperous and sustainable world for all.
