Mat Than Mountain, also known in Tay language as Phja Piot (meaning pierced mountain), is located in Cao Chuong commune, Trung Khanh district, Cao Bang province. This is one of the special destinations on the eastern tourist route "Experience indigenous culture in the fairyland" of Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark.

The mountain stands out with a circular hole located halfway up the mountain, with a diameter of up to 50 meters - a unique masterpiece formed during the geological tectonic process tens of millions of years ago.

According to scientists, this hole is actually a dry cave - or fossil cave - formed more than 300 million years ago, when this area was an ancient seabed. Over time, the uplift movement during the Neotectonic period pushed the cave up, leaving the traces as they are today.

This is a rare geological phenomenon, making Mat Than Mountain the only mountain with a large and unique natural hole in Vietnam, a vivid testament to the history of the formation of the limestone mountain system in the Northeast region.

Located about 30 km from Cao Bang city center, Mat Than mountain area appears like a vast grassland with open, peaceful space.

The green, endless grassland surrounding the mountain is where herds of cows, buffaloes, and horses leisurely graze, creating a scene that is both wild and poetic.

On April 17, Nam Tra Lake near the mountain area drained water, the landscape became even more magical with a green grass carpet stretching to the foot of the mountain.

This is also the ideal time for camping, taking photos, or simply enjoying the tranquility amidst the majestic nature. Mr. Nguyen Hoang Quan (a tourist from Hanoi) - shared: "Mat Than Mountain is the first place our group visited when arriving in Cao Bang, the scenery here is wonderful".

With its special geological value, spectacular landscape and rich indigenous culture, Mat Than Mountain is not only an attractive destination but also a vivid symbol of the harmony between nature and people in the mountainous region of Cao Bang.

Mat Than Mountain is also ranked as a National Scenic Spot by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism according to Decision No. 1988/QD-BVHTTDL dated June 29, 2021.
