Meta has been developing its web indexes for at least the past eight months, The Information reports. The company’s goal is to integrate the index into Meta AI to give the chatbot an alternative search capability to Google Search and Microsoft Bing.

Parent company Facebook publicly disclosed its web-scraping technology over the summer, but only said it was intended to “train AI models or improve products” without mentioning building a search platform.

The tech giant's move comes directly from its reliance on names that have "damaged" Meta in the past, typically Apple's user privacy framework (ATT) policy.

According to one estimate, Meta said the iPhone's privacy feature in 2021 could cost the company more than $10 billion in lost advertising revenue.

That's why CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants to give Meta more autonomy in case Google or Microsoft cuts off access to web searches.

In August, Zuckerberg said on his Threads social media account that Meta AI had more than 185 million weekly active users and more than 400 million monthly users.

“That's impressive growth considering we haven't even launched in the UK, Brazil or the EU,” the Facebook founder wrote.

Meanwhile, OpenAI said ChatGPT had 250 million weekly users as of earlier this month.
