Enter Lab after 3 months of enrollment

Coming from his hometown in Vung Tau, in 2020, Vu Truong Giang applied to VinUni University with a passion for becoming a technology engineer. With an impressive record and an inspiring demeanor, Giang won a 90% scholarship and became one of the first generation of VinUni students. “I am very proud to be the first generation of VinUni students, and I hope to make my mark and experience being a pioneer,” Giang excitedly said.

Three months after enrolling, Vu Truong Giang quickly had access to the Lab and directly participated with the lecturers in many large-scale and practical technology projects. This is different, because in most other universities, students do not have access to the lab until their third year.

Vu Truong Giang applied to VinUni University with the passion of becoming a technology engineer.

Giang’s most memorable project is “ Protecting the privacy of personal data ” applied in many different fields. The project helped Truong Giang gain a deeper understanding of the working process and research process. He learned a lot about the expertise and working style of teachers, especially foreign lecturers. As a result, Vu Truong Giang had 2 research articles published at the International Conference on this project while he was a second-year student at VinUni.

The “practical” factor in computer science, for Truong Giang, is very important, deciding the quality of learning. The young student humorously recounted that since 6th grade, he had “destroyed” a family desktop computer, because its system of machines and data seemed to have a gravitational pull on him. Giang’s parents were willing to “sacrifice” that computer, when they saw the excitement and passion in their son’s eyes, and his passion for technology grew.

Giang decided to pursue a Master's degree when he participated in a 3-month software engineering internship in Hanoi, while also applying for the Vingroup Science and Technology Scholarship program. "The program's commitment is very consistent with my orientation, which is to study and return to contribute to the country. The full scholarship has given me the opportunity to study at Penn - a top university in the world" - Truong Giang said.

In 2023, VinUni will have 6 outstanding students participating in the 3+2 program at Penn. Professor Boon Thau Loo (Deputy Dean of Graduate Programs - School of Engineering and Applied Science, University of Pennsylvania) is very impressed with the quality of VinUni students.

“You have diverse skills, knowledge, and interests. Education and cultural exchange are essential to foster understanding between nations, so that we can work together and solve global engineering challenges. Penn is committed to expanding its partnership with the Vietnamese academic community and looks forward to welcoming VinUni students to the Penn community,” said Professor Boon Thau Loo.

“If you have the chance, try it, don't think too much!”

Although he was a good student, not all roads were smooth for Truong Giang. For example, practicing English during his 4 years of secondary school. The person who directly taught Giang English was... his mother. As an English teacher, his mother accompanied Giang throughout his 4 years of secondary school, which was also the "golden" time to create a very good foreign language foundation for him.

Giang also encountered many failures during her high school years, especially when she decided to join the IT team while she was a student in the English major. “A new turning point was more challenging, but for me it was an opportunity. Giang said: “Opportunities come whether you succeed or fail, but just try, don’t think too much! Because only through challenges can you know your capabilities.”

Ms. Le Thi Nguyet - Truong Giang's mother shared that Giang herself has had a passion for machines since childhood. Giang has also taken apart the computer in the house several times. When she was in middle school, whenever there was a playground or computer science competition, Giang wanted to participate, her parents took turns... carrying their backpacks to take her to the competition.

Vu Truong Giang plans to become a software engineer, return and work at VinUni. In particular, Giang wants to participate in the Student Informatics Olympiad and the International Student Programming Contest ICPC – two famous and prestigious IT playgrounds, as a coach.

Choosing 3 words to describe VinUni, Giang said, they are New (initiating to create a legacy for the school, pioneering), Fast (flexible, creating conditions for students to be creative, not constrained by machines) and Classy (investment in human resources that meet international standards and the school's very high and clear goal orientation, training excellent talents to return to help their homeland). "I find myself in that orientation and wish to become one of the core elements on VinUni's journey in the future!" - Vu Truong Giang shared.

* The Vingroup Science and Technology Scholarship Program was established in 2019 with the goal of finding Vietnamese talents to nurture and develop into talents capable of leading the development of science and technology in Vietnam in the future. Each year, Vingroup will award full scholarships for Master's and PhD degrees to Vietnamese talents to study key majors at excellent training institutions in many countries. After the first 5 courses, nearly 180 students were awarded doctoral and master's scholarships and studied at 38 leading universities in the world.
