Man City's most expensive player was pushed out, new destination is unexpected

Jack Grealish will undergo a medical at Everton today (UK time), after the Merseyside club reached an agreement to loan him from Man City for a season.

The 29-year-old's departure from the Etihad came as no surprise, especially after being left out of Pep Guardiola's squad for the FIFA Club World Cup. However, his choice to join a relegation-threatened club like Everton has come as a surprise to many.

Grealish's salary is around £300,000 a week. Man City and Everton did not specify the method of payment for the English midfielder.

Last season, Grealish played 32 matches in all competitions for Man City but he only started half of them. In the Premier League, the midfielder born in 1995 only started 7 matches.

Grealish joined Man City from Aston Villa in 2021 for a club record fee of £100m. The England midfielder has made 157 appearances, scoring 17 goals and providing 23 assists in four years at the Etihad.

The 30-year-old star has helped The Citizens win 3 Premier League titles, 1 Champions League, 1 FA Cup, European Super Cup, 1 FIFA Club World Cup.

Manager Pep Guardiola admitted earlier this year that he wanted Grealish to recapture his Treble-winning form, saying: “I want to see Jack from the Treble season but he has to fight for his place and prove he deserves to play every day, every week.”

Everton manager David Moyes had heaped praise on Grealish when he was at Aston Villa. In 2021, Moyes said Grealish was “probably the best player in the Premier League right now”.

The England midfielder has expressed his disappointment at being left out of the Euro 2024 squad. Playing for Everton could help him regain his form and raise hopes of returning to the England squad, aiming for the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico. To date, Grealish has made 39 appearances for the Three Lions.
