On August 23, the Command of Coast Guard Region 3 coordinated with the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee, Gia Thuan Party Committee and People's Committee to organize the activity "Coast Guard accompanies fishermen" in 2025.
Presenting national flags, life jackets and first aid kits to fishermen and representatives of fishermen's families
The program took place with activities such as: propaganda, distribution of leaflets, documents, legal handbooks; presenting national flags (from the program "Proud of the National Flag" of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper), flashlights, life jackets, medical bags to representatives of 10 fishing boats anchored at Vam Lang fishing port, Gia Thuan commune; organizing medical examinations, health consultations, providing free medicine to more than 300 policy beneficiaries, fishermen's families and people in difficult circumstances in the commune; signing a commitment not to violate IUU.
The program's organizers also presented 40 gifts (each worth 1 million VND) to policy families and fishermen in difficult circumstances.
In addition, Hung Vuong Hospital also supported medical examination and treatment, provided medicine and gave 100 more gifts to poor households in coastal areas with a total value of 20 million VND.
Dong Thap province currently has more than 1,200 fishing boats, mainly operating offshore. Recently, the fishing industry has seen positive changes, with most fishermen making a profit.
At the two fishing ports of My Tho and Vam Lang, in the first 6 months of 2025, more than 4,000 fishing boats docked, with the unloading output reaching 16,674 tons of seafood, equivalent to the same period last year.
Fishermen sign IUU pledge and receive gifts from Coast Guard
Thanks to the propaganda work of the government and forces such as the Border Guard, Coast Guard, Navy, etc., Dong Thap fishermen have complied well with IUU regulations. Since the beginning of the year, many fishing boats have achieved high economic efficiency, with some boats earning nearly 1 billion VND after 3 trips at sea.
Ms. Ho Thi Bich Huyen (residing in Doi Ma hamlet, Gia Thuan commune) said that her family has 6 fishing boats operating offshore, each trip (lasting about 3 months) earns a profit of more than 300 million VND.
Organize propaganda on fishing laws for fishermen and fishermen's families
"In general, fishing is very stable, more profitable than previous years, selling at a good price. However, it depends on the boat, some boats catch a lot, some catch a little. For example, some boats go 4-5 months and earn 700-800 million VND, while my boat only earns over 300 million VND. I don't fish in the wrong area, I don't go through other countries, the boat has full journey monitoring equipment, life jackets, fire extinguishers..." - Ms. Huyen said.
Free medical examination and medicine for 300 people in Gia Thuan commune
Ms. Ha Tran Phuong Thuy, Vice Chairwoman of Gia Thuan Commune People's Committee, said that the commune has the largest seafood exploitation industry in Dong Thap province, with more than 500 vessels in operation. Thanks to propaganda and dissemination of the law, local fishermen have not violated IUU for a long time.
Regarding IUU, the locality has implemented it for a long time and focused on propaganda and violation prevention for fishermen.
"We coordinate with the border guard station to continue to deploy many programs directly to each vehicle to encourage fishermen to comply with IUU fishing" - Ms. Thuy informed.
