How to protect your eyes on sunny days

Although exposure to sunlight for a certain period of time is good for health, eyes are sensitive organs and if not protected for a long time, they can be damaged.

Responding to CNET news site, Dr. William T. Reynolds - president of the American Optometric Association, said that choosing sunglasses with the ability to block ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB) is very important.

It is important to choose sunglasses that provide protection against ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB).

“You should wear sunglasses when you're outside, whether you're in the car, at the beach, or even on cloudy, overcast days,” says Reynolds.

Also, remember to apply sunscreen around your eyes, wear a sun hat, and wear sunglasses for added protection, Reynolds recommends.

Explaining more clearly the harmful effects of sunlight on eye health, the president of the American Optometric Association said: "UV rays from the sun can damage the skin of the eyelids, cornea, lens and other parts of the eye. Even in a short period of time, such as exposure to bright sunlight at the beach continuously for a day can lead to keratitis."

Reynolds also points out that some warning signs of this condition include red or swollen eyes, itching, pain, a gritty feeling in the eye, and sensitivity to light. Although photokeratitis is usually temporary, it can cause more serious damage to the eye if you repeat the condition frequently.

"Over time, when the eyes are exposed to solar radiation, the risk of developing cataracts, eye cancer or macular degeneration will increase," Dr. Reynolds said.
