A group called the "Islamic Resistance in Iraq" claimed responsibility for the latest attack, saying in a statement that it targeted al-Harir airbase with two drones.

Some people in the Green Zone in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, where the US Embassy is located, also said sirens sounded at the embassy on the evening of November 8, but there were no reports of artillery impact or casualties.

US and international forces based in Iraq and across the border in Syria have been on high alert after dozens of attacks on their bases in the weeks since the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted.

In another development, a US military MQ-9 drone was shot down by Yemen's Houthi forces on November 8, according to two US officials and the Iran-aligned Houthi movement.

Although US drones have been shot down by the Houthis before, the incident comes at a particularly tense time in the region.

US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the drone, made by General Atomics, was shot down off the coast of Yemen. They did not say whether it was brought down in international airspace.

In a statement, a Houthi military spokesman said they shot down the drone in the airspace over Yemen's territorial waters.

The Pentagon has deployed thousands of troops to the region to try to prevent conflict, including two aircraft carriers.

Last month, a US Navy warship intercepted four cruise missiles and more than a dozen drones launched from Yemen by the Houthi movement toward Israel.
