Scientists find a great trick to use a fan to cool down when it's too hot

A study recently published in the scientific journal JAMA Network Open has found a way to use electric fans effectively in hot weather conditions.

Fans are still effective at high temperatures if used properly.

New research conducted by scientists at the University of Montreal (Canada) shows that fans can still effectively cool down at temperatures up to 37-38°C, if used properly, according to health news site WebMD.

At 38°C and 60% humidity, using fans slightly reduced core body temperature and reduced the workload of the heart – a factor that is especially important for older adults, said study co-author and thermal physiologist Dr Daniel Gagnon. Participants also reported feeling more comfortable and at ease, but only if humidity was maintained.

If the humidity is too low, using a humidifier, placing indoor plants, or placing bowls of water around the room may also help.

However, when the temperature reaches 40°C, fans can be counterproductive, increasing body temperature because the surrounding air is hotter than the skin temperature. In this case, experts recommend using air conditioning or finding a public place with air conditioning to avoid heat shock.

Stay hydrated

Sweating is a natural cooling mechanism through evaporation. Fans help speed up this process through convection, but only if the body is hydrated enough to continue sweating. In the study, participants were asked to drink about 8 ounces of water per hour. So don't wait until you're thirsty, but sip regularly to maintain the cooling process, according to WebMD.

Combines skin moisturizing to increase cooling effect

Another interesting finding is that moistening the skin helps fans work more effectively. Even at 40°C, using a fan with a mist spray or wet wipes on the skin reduces the burden on the heart, reduces sweating and creates a cooler feeling. You can use a water spray bottle or wet wipes to maintain moisture on the skin.

Important Note

Indoor temperatures can be higher than outdoor temperatures, especially in places without air conditioning. If you experience symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headache, or blurred vision, get out of the heat immediately, rest, and rehydrate. If symptoms do not improve within 1 hour, seek emergency medical attention.

In summary, using fans properly, combined with staying hydrated, moisturizing the skin, and monitoring ambient temperatures are effective strategies to protect health, especially in the context of climate change that is increasing extreme heat waves.
