According to the initial investigation results, on the afternoon of May 28, Truong and Thuy were riding a motorbike through Hoa Nam 1 village (Ea Nuol commune) when they discovered a household drying many bags of pepper. Because they needed money to spend, the two discussed a plan to steal.

At around 11:30 p.m. the same day, Thuy sat in the car, keeping watch outside, while Truong used pliers to cut the gate lock, broke into the house's warehouse, stole 10 bags of pepper, and brought them back to his rented room in Thanh Nhat ward to hide.

The next morning, the two hired a truck to transport the pepper to Ea Ktur commune and sold it for more than 46 million VND, then quickly escaped by bus through many southern provinces.

After more than 2 months of investigation, the Criminal Police Department determined that both were hiding in Thuan An commune, Lam Dong province, so they deployed a task force to arrest them.

It is known that Tran Ngoc Truong had a previous conviction for theft of property.
