The media was surprised by the news that the U.21 Vietnamese women's volleyball team was declared to have lost all group stage matches.
Thairath , a Thai newspaper , published a detailed article about the incident, titled "Vietnamese athletes disqualified from the 2025 U.21 Women's Volleyball World Championship". The newspaper wrote that the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) requested a surprise qualification check for two Vietnamese players and one player failed to pass the test, leading to his disqualification. The Vietnamese U.21 women's volleyball team was subsequently penalized with three losses and had to play matches ranked 17th to 24th.
The incident of the U.21 women's Vietnam surprised the Southeast Asian volleyball community.
Siam Sports (Thailand) also reported on the incident, with the headline "Vietnam U.21 women's volleyball team disqualified from the tournament due to not meeting the competition requirements". The newspaper highlighted the reaction of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation (VFV), when this organization affirmed that it had fully complied with the FIVB's registration process and had submitted a complete application before the tournament. However, FIVB made a surprise inspection request on August 12, which VFV said was an unprecedented regulation. The newspaper also said that although VFV objected to the decision, FIVB continued to investigate and eventually decided to disqualify a player and forfeit 3 group stage matches for the Vietnamese team.
U.21 Vietnam was declared defeated, FIVB allowed to receive replacement ticket: Host Indonesia reacted unexpectedly
Indonesian press reported in a flurry
Because the U.21 Women's Volleyball World Cup is being held in Indonesia, the Indonesian press has reported a lot about the incident. After Vietnam was eliminated from the round of 16, the host country was also promoted to replace them to compete in this round.
The Indonesian newspaper Antara stressed that the incident caused a lot of controversy in the international sports community and disrupted the results of the tournament. FIVB requested tests on two players of the Vietnamese team, one of whom failed the test, leading to the Vietnamese team losing four matches and having to play matches ranked from 17th to 24th.
Vietnam only had 1 win against Puerto Rico after being disqualified in the remaining matches.
Before being disqualified, U.21 Vietnam had a 3-0 victory over the home team.
Tribunnews (Indonesia) also reported the same news and quoted the reaction from VFV. This page wrote : VFV has explained why two of their players did not play in the match against Puerto Rico. This page quoted VFV General Secretary Le Tri Truong as saying that the reason the two Vietnamese players did not play in the final match of the group stage was due to additional administrative procedures. Mr. Truong said that this situation happened because the Organizing Committee requested additional documents, such as birth certificates, for the players.
The VFV's argument did not change the FIVB's decision and the agency is still investigating. Before this incident, U.21 Vietnam was ranked second in the rankings with 12 points. However, after the incident, Vietnam fell to the bottom of the table with 3 points and only one win.
