Today (June 27), the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) held a workshop on "Press economics issues for scientific journals of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations in 2023".
According to Vice President of the Union of Associations - Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Ngoc Linh, the Union of Associations has a large press system, with great potential to strongly develop information activities, disseminate knowledge, provide critical advice and social appraisal, and is an important channel in disseminating the policies of the Party and State.
Over the past time, the press in the Union system has continuously improved its content and reporting methods, meeting the increasing information needs of scientists, intellectuals and readers nationwide. However, the requirements and tasks set for press agencies in the current period are very large, including the issue of press economics.
Technology is “Queen”
Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Loi, Editor-in-Chief of Economic and Urban Newspaper, Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association, said that in the trend of digital transformation, press agencies, in addition to performing political tasks, need to do well and keep up with the movement and development trends of the digital technology era.
According to Mr. Loi, for a press agency to successfully transform digitally, it needs technology and support solutions from management agencies and connections between press agencies.
To develop the economy in the field of journalism in the current competitive context, journalist Nguyen Thanh Loi suggested that press agencies need to change their thinking and attach importance to modern journalism technology. It is no coincidence that press agencies around the world have come up with a new journalism philosophy: Content and technology must go hand in hand. Technology is “Queen”, or “the public is number 1” has been dominating the global journalism market, of which Vietnam is no exception.
At the same time, build a professional and systematic communication and advertising department. In addition, press agencies need to build a new advertising network and restructure economic activities, and develop a strategy to "electronicize" the press.
In addition, press agencies need to have policies to build effective customer care teams; need to analyze data to convince readers to pay for online newspapers. This is also a source of revenue for newspapers in the current digital transformation trend.

Need to pay attention to revenue development strategy
Expressing her opinion, Ms. Tran Thi Giang, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Today's Automation Magazine, said that the implementation of the financial autonomy mechanism at press agencies under the Union of Associations is posing a problem for the press agencies themselves as well as the direct and indirect management agencies, which are the Union of Associations, the Central Propaganda Department, and the Ministry of Information and Communications.
According to Ms. Tran Thi Giang, it is necessary to pay attention to the synchronization of content innovation and distribution. The innovation of information content on press products needs to be carried out simultaneously with effective distribution.
In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to the strategy of developing revenue sources for press agencies, creating reasonable policies and mechanisms to mobilize collective resources. Increasing the initiative, creativity, professional capacity and ethics of officers and employees in press offices. Building a financial management and use mechanism suitable to the characteristics of press activities...
At the workshop, delegates discussed a number of issues on multi-platform digital transformation - a tool for developing the press economy; financial autonomy for press agencies: difficulties, challenges and solutions... From there, many delegates proposed recommendations and solutions for autonomous press agencies of the Vietnam Union of Press Associations to overcome difficulties.
