118 countries endorse Russia's resolution on fascism

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 19 adopted Russia's annual resolution on the fight against the glorification of Nazism.

The resolution was previously adopted by the General Assembly's Third Committee. 118 countries voted in favor of the resolution, 49 against it and 14 abstained. Russia, China and Israel were among the countries that voted in favor of the document.

The United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Japan, Ukraine, France, Canada, Australia, Austria, Albania, Belgium, Estonia, Czech Republic, Finland, Georgia, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Moldova, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and several other countries voted against.

The resolution recommends that States take measures consistent with their international human rights obligations to prevent revision of the history and results of World War II.

The authors of the resolution strongly condemn the propaganda of Nazism, in particular the use of pro-Nazi graffiti and drawings, including on memorials to the victims of World War II.

The document calls on States to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination by all appropriate means, including legislation where the circumstances so require. It also strongly condemns the use of educational materials that promote racism, discrimination or violence based on race, nationality, religion or belief.
