Vietnam ready to protect citizens affected by earthquake in Myanmar

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on the afternoon of March 28, causing strong tremors in neighboring provinces of Thailand. According to preliminary information, many structures in the two countries were damaged, with casualties still being counted.

Upon receiving the news, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs promptly directed representative agencies in Myanmar and Thailand to set up hotlines and closely coordinate with local authorities to check information about Vietnamese people.

As of 6 p.m. (local time) the same day, no Vietnamese citizens have been directly affected. Representative agencies are continuing to monitor the situation and are ready to deploy emergency evacuation plans if necessary.

According to seismologists, the central region of Myanmar lies on the Sagaing Fault Zone - one of the most seismically active regions in Southeast Asia. Since 2020, the region has recorded more than 20 earthquakes with a magnitude of over 5 on the Richter scale. Experts warn that aftershocks may continue to occur in the next 24-48 hours, especially in areas near the epicenter.

For the Vietnamese community living in these two countries (estimated at about 5,000 people in Myanmar and 120,000 people in Thailand), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends staying away from damaged buildings and closely monitoring warnings from local authorities.
