The first IOI was held in 1989 in Bulgaria. Vietnam was one of the participating countries from the very first year. To date, the Vietnamese team has won 22 gold medals, 53 silver and 55 bronze. The team's best achievement was in 1999 with three golds and one silver.

This year’s IOI took place in Bolivia from July 27 to August 3. Four members of the Vietnamese team were selected from the national excellent student competition. During June and early July, they were trained under the guidance of lecturers and alumni with experience in international Olympiads at the University of Technology.

The outstanding results at IOI 2025 once again affirm the quality of general education in Vietnam, as well as the right direction in the work of discovering, selecting and nurturing excellent students of the Ministry of Education and Training.

This achievement also shows that Vietnamese students have the thinking and computer science capacity that is not inferior to the leading countries in the region and the world.

Previously, at the 2025 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO) held in Uzbekistan, all 6 Vietnamese students won medals, including 1 Gold medal, 2 Silver medals, and 3 Bronze medals.
