The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare industry is gradually becoming a trend, with the function of supporting people's healthcare, reducing pressure on medical staff.
According to experts, with the support of AI, the healthcare industry will have remarkable developments in examination, diagnosis, determining patient treatment regimens, hospital management...
In the medical field, we can mention the project "Exploiting electronic medical records with AI" chaired by Professor, Dr. Ho Tu Bao, Director of the Data Science Laboratory, Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM).
The project was carried out at Ho Chi Minh City National University, phase 2016-2021 and put into implementation and application in hospitals from the beginning of 2019. The representative of the research team said that the project focuses on using AI to develop tools for collecting, retrieving data, exploiting patient medical records, using AI to analyze medical data, processing clinical documents, converting electronic medical records into common data in digital and text form... thereby supporting the medical team and doctors in managing and taking care of people's health.
Vietnam currently has about 13,000 medical examination and treatment facilities, with about 135 hospitals of grade 1 or higher. In order to provide better health care for the people, since 2019, the Ministry of Health has been promoting the development of smart healthcare. In particular, the application of electronic medical records at medical examination and treatment facilities has been mandatory since March 2019. In the period of 2024-2028, all medical examination and treatment facilities nationwide must deploy electronic medical records - a digital version of medical records, recorded, displayed and stored by electronic means, with a legal basis and functions equivalent to paper medical records as prescribed in the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment.
However, up to now, only 37/135 hospitals have deployed electronic medical records, reaching 20% of the target set by the Ministry of Health. “Electronic medical records are a resource for medical examination and treatment, medical research, and AI is a core component to develop basic tools that allow exploiting the features of electronic medical records. The project aims to apply AI to build a digital infrastructure; in which, every citizen can manage their health records as their own property. In addition, connecting electronic medical records between hospitals also creates a national electronic health record database, thereby contributing to the successful digital transformation in the health sector in Vietnam,” shared Professor, Dr. Ho Tu Bao.
