From the obsession called 'project' to love for architecture: The journey of maturity of a creative person

However, there is another truth that few people talk about: it is from those obsessions that the love for architecture begins to blossom. And for many students of the Faculty of Architecture - Hanoi University of Architecture, that journey is not lonely, but is given wings by the companionship and guidance of teachers and seniors, in an academic environment full of creative inspiration.

Architectural project is not just a drawing, it reflects the architect's personality.

Unlike many other majors, architecture students do not have “15-minute tests”, do not have much “empty theory” to “learn by heart”, but learn through continuous creative practice – especially through course projects, design projects, graduation projects...

Each project is not simply an exercise, but a product that reflects the learner's perspective, personality and spatial thinking.

This is what makes many first-year students feel pressured. Because there is no one to hold their hand and guide them through each line – students have to rack their brains to come up with ideas, research, design, and defend their products. Some students spend weeks just looking for inspiration. Some stay up all night just to adjust the perspective. Some drawings are “red-lined” by the review board, only for the student to… redo them and make great progress.

From initial obsession to true passion

Many students share that the first project is always the most tearful experience, but also the most important milestone. Because it is in that “collision” that they realize: architecture is not just about drawing beautifully – but about solving spatial problems in a meaningful and humane way.

At the Faculty of Architecture – Hanoi University of Architecture, the training program is designed in an open way, creating conditions for students to explore a variety of topics – from housing, public works, heritage conservation to green architecture, community architecture, urban reconstruction... With the close guidance of lecturers – many of whom are famous architects with a lot of practical experience – students are not only imparted professional skills but also inspired with creativity, critical thinking and professional qualities.

Architecture is not just about drawing beautifully – it is about solving spatial problems in a meaningful and humane way through real-life experiences.

In the architectural environment, projects are not just drawings but stories told through space. Students are guided on how to develop ideas, materialize them into shapes, spaces, details, etc., how to express the spirit of the project through hand drawings or digital graphics, how to make models to convey intuitive feelings - and most importantly, how to present - convince - defend their own products.

That is why the excellent projects of Architecture students always attract attention in specialized exhibitions, national or international competitions. Many students from their own projects have stepped into the big playground: Loa Thanh award, Green Architecture award, AYDA award, ArcAsia... attending international workshops in Japan, China, Korea, Europe...

Turning your project obsession into a passion – it's possible

At the Faculty of Architecture - Hanoi University of Architecture, many final year students proudly shared: "We used to be very afraid of projects, but now it is the job we look forward to the most". Because each project is a challenge for ourselves, an opportunity for unlimited creativity, a time for personal ideas to flourish, connecting with the community and living environment.

A project is not just an assignment – it is the first step to becoming a real architect.

In a way, every architecture student is a storyteller. And “doing a project” is the first time they learn how to tell a story in spatial language, realize a spatial dream, turn imagination into real structures/forms.

At the Faculty of Architecture - Hanoi University of Architecture, students do not only study to do projects and graduate - but also study to find themselves, nurture their love for the profession, and gradually mature in the role of a person who creates living spaces for people, communities and society.

So, if someone asks: “Is the project scary?”, smile and answer:

“Yes, but the more you do it, the more you will love it.”
