In a solemn atmosphere, leaders of Ha Tinh province, Nghi Xuan district and descendants offered incense to commemorate the great contributions of the great national poet Nguyen Du.
On the morning of September 24 (ie August 10 of the lunar calendar), the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism held a memorial service for the great poet Nguyen Du on the occasion of the 203rd anniversary (1820-2023) of his death. Attending the ceremony were Head of the Provincial Party Committee's Organizing Committee Vo Hong Hai. Representatives of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Nghi Xuan district, Nguyen Du Cultural Heritage Conservation Fund, Vietnam Kieu Studies Association Office in Ha Tinh and the 8th generation descendants of the Great Poet also attended. |
Nguyen Du (1765-1820) whose given name was To Nhu, and his pen name was Thanh Hien. His father was the Imperial Doctor Nguyen Nghiem (from Tien Dien commune, Nghi Xuan), who served as a minister under the Le dynasty, and his wife, Tran Thi Tan, from Kinh Bac (Bac Ninh). During the Nguyen Dynasty, Nguyen Du was an official who reached the position of district chief and was sent by the king to China twice. On the 10th day of the 8th lunar month in 1820, Nguyen Du fell ill and died in Hue. Nguyen Du left many valuable literary legacies to Vietnamese literature, most notably the masterpiece The Tale of Kieu.
