Equip yourself for the future

Attending the event were representatives of the Vietnam Olympic Committee, the Vietnam Sports Department, experts, businessmen and nearly 100 athletes and coaches from the National Athletes Training Center in Hanoi.

Speaking at the workshop, Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet emphasized: In recent years, the Party and State have issued many support and preferential policies for generations of athletes and coaches, in order to encourage, promote their capacity and contribute to the country's sports career.

In particular, the work of supporting, training and career transition for athletes after the end of their peak competition period has always been of interest. This was also one of the contents discussed at the seventh session of the 15th National Assembly .

The sports industry has recently been actively seeking partners to provide scholarships and create job opportunities for athletes. Typical examples are cooperation agreements with the University of Economics (Vietnam National University, Hanoi),FPT University, Dai Nam University, etc. to train bachelors and masters, especially for athletes with outstanding achievements.

However, Mr. Viet also frankly admitted that training, career guidance and career conversion still face many difficulties, mainly because the educational level of many athletes does not match the requirements of most social professions.

Therefore, this workshop is organized to provide information, knowledge and entrepreneurial skills, helping athletes to be confident and creative in proactively finding or creating jobs after finishing their peak competitive careers.

At the same time, this is also an opportunity for them to introduce their ideas and projects to investors, opening up new directions and job opportunities for themselves. "I hope that after the workshop, athletes will accumulate more useful knowledge and confidently seek suitable careers to continue developing when they no longer compete," said Director Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet.

Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen - Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sports Administration, Head of the Sports and Women's Committee of the Vietnam Olympic Committee - shared: "The workshop is organized to accompany athletes in the transition period after their competitive career, helping them orient their careers in accordance with their abilities and passions; easily access job opportunities and start a business; at the same time equip them with soft skills, knowledge of technology, communication and gender equality in the sports environment."

With the presence of eight speakers who are leaders in the sports industry, businesses and organizations inside and outside the field, the conference brought six topics, providing a comprehensive perspective on the future of careers and the necessary luggage after leaving the arena.

Notably, Mr. Tran Anh Cuong - Chairman of Vietnam Interior - shared about three important stages that athletes need to go through after retirement: understanding themselves, discovering their career direction and building a transition roadmap.

Answering athletes' questions about their income after leaving the ring, Mr. Cuong said: it could be income from learning a new profession, building a personal brand for advertising, speaking; or from small investments that help profits gradually stabilize.

In addition, athletes can also exploit the potential of writing books, creating shared content or participating in consulting and coaching. From these suggestions, each athlete will be able to build a suitable and solid roadmap for the future.

Mr. Tran Viet Sang - Training Manager of California Fitness and Yoga Vietnam - continues to add career orientations and opportunities to explore new sources of income, helping athletes proactively seek development directions after their competitive careers.

In particular, Vice President of the Vietnam Kickboxing Federation Le Thi Nga imparted a lot of knowledge about developing soft skills, helping athletes confidently build a new image outside of sports life.

She frankly pointed out that many Vietnamese athletes, although brave on the field, are quite shy in daily communication. “You have worn the national flag and brought glory to the country. Therefore, when entering the real world, be confident and apply the spirit of professionalism and discipline from the training and competition process to be ready for the new job,” Ms. Le Thi Nga emphasized.

She also believes that soft skills are the key to opening the door to success. Athletes need to change their mindset, set big ambitions and gradually transform themselves from the image of an athlete to a new role in society. “When leaving the athlete’s jersey, you need to equip yourself with effective communication skills, flexible thinking, confidence in expressing yourself and building an image suitable for the new job,” she said.

The workshop is considered an important first step, helping Vietnamese athletes proactively prepare for the future, be ready to integrate into the labor market and continue to contribute to the community, even when no longer on the playing field.
