US President sends message of peace, announces more military aid to Kiev; Mr. Zelensky attends peace and security session

US President Joe Biden vowed to work toward a world without nuclear weapons in a message he wrote in the guestbook of a museum in Hiroshima, which documents the devastation caused by the US atomic bomb in 1945, the Japanese government said on May 20.

After visiting the museum on May 19, Mr. Biden wrote: “Hopefully the stories of this Museum remind us all of our obligation to build a peaceful future… Together, let us continue to make progress toward the day when we can finally and forever rid the world of nuclear weapons.”

The US President is visiting the western Japanese city to attend the G7 Summit, which is scheduled to last until May 21.

* Meanwhile, earlier, on May 19, also in Hiroshima city - where he was attending the G7 Summit, an anonymous US official revealed that President Joe Biden would announce a $375 million military aid package for Ukraine.

The new aid package will include artillery, ammunition and high-mobility artillery rocket launchers (HIMARS), the official said.

* On May 20, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will directly attend the G7 Summit in Hiroshima on May 21 and have a bilateral meeting with host country Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

According to the ministry, President Zelensky will attend a discussion session on peace and security with G7 leaders and invited representatives from outside the group.

The Ukrainian President is expected to arrive in Hiroshima on May 20 and hold bilateral meetings with leaders attending the conference.
